As the title says, what would you choose? Top 10 or less. You must shoot it well and it must be reliable. No size or caliber restriction. Here's my list, let's see yours:

Any Sig DA/SA (P227,P228,P239)
Beretta 92 (M9A3 my preference)
Any HK (P30 LEM Lite, VP9F, USP)
Any 1911 (Dan Wesson, Ed Brown, Nighthawk)
S&W 586/686
S&W K Frame (Model 19,10,15)
P320,P365 ( I shoot them well and all have been reliable for me.)
S&W 640 J frame
CZ75
Colt Trooper

What would I choose or what would I be ok using in a defensive situation?

My first choice is a P226 or a P229. But there's a huge list of guns that I would be perfectly confident using if I had to.

Currently my actual "serious use" gun lineup includes:

Personal EDC: P229 9mm
Work EDC: P320 9mm
Work BUGs: P320 9mm and Smith 642 .38 +P
Personal BUG: Smith 642 .38 +P
Nightstand/HD Gun: P226 9mm
Woods Gun: Smith 329PD .44 Mag, 69 .44 Mag, or 3" 60 .357 Mag

My Glock 21 is what I have handy.

Got a Glock 40 10mm next to my bed. Never really thought about any others.

I don't shoot Glocks that well but it is hard to argue about their reliability. Smile

It depends where I am and what the plan is for the day.

Out on the street or driving someplace? Social work perhaps? HK P2000 9mm or HK45 in colder weather with a jacket. Warmer weather and no jacket, HK P2000sk 9mm. Sometimes with a Seecamp .32ACP as backup.

At home, SIG P226 with stainless steel frames in a wide assortment of chamberings, multiple 7.62 and 5.56 rifles pre-staged, and 12 gauge shotguns with buckshot.
Perhaps a nail gun and the tennis ball shooter gun for the dog. Razz
But if I was out for the day and dragged one of the HK's along while out, I likely would not put it in the safe and get a stainless steel SIG out for home self defense. Less trips in and out of the safe.

A quick trip out to pick up a pizza or a loaf of bread? Sometimes just the Seecamp .32 or a Smith & Wesson J frame.

Recreational visit at the rural property/cabin. When blueberries are in full abundant growth, SIG P220 in 10mm or Ruger Redhawk in .44 Magnum. No blueberries, HK P2000 in 9mm.
I never go to the recreational property without carrying at least a 9mm handgun. And I do mean never.

When big game hunting with family members, whatever flavor of rifle for the day, and usually a Ruger single action revolver in .44 magnum. But sometimes the SIG P220 10mm gets the nod.

I do like choices, and staying proficient both for shooting, and reloading ammo, takes time and money.

I hear you. I’ve never been one to really change carry guns or home defense guns often. Always been very basic and reliable

No need for ten. Any of the three here will do: P228, G19, USPc9.

Or, maybe just my AR "handgun". Big Grin

I don't have an extensive rotation because I went pocket carry a few years ago, and it's worked out so well for me anything larger than a G26 is sitting in the safe. That being said my 226 DAK is the bump in the night gun. My 365 has replaced the G26 as my EDC, with a J frame becomming the gym carry option.

Somehow I figured the P228 would be on your list. The question for you is which one !! Big Grin

Glock 17 on my side of the bed, G19 on her side of the bed. 2 Surefires next to each, a Streamlight attached to mine.
Mossberg 500 w/sidesaddle in the corner.
No sense making it complicated.

Usually have either a Glock 43x or a 26 on all day long, so that gets set aside in the holster for the night.

From there a G35 gen4 with TLR7 and 3 spare mags takes over for the night.

Office gun is currently a G41 with a TLR7.

Patio gun, or taking a walk in the woods is either a G36 or G27 loaded with BuffaloBore hardcast solids (yogi bears).

Honorable mention guns that get frequent use would be S&W M39-2, Springfield Hellcat, G19.
And of course an AR carbine and Mossberg 12g both with WML’s.
