Ever want a gun for absolutely no practical reason? Login/Join

At my age, I am trying to get going on "thinning the herd." But it is tough to part with a gun and tough to keep from putting the proceeds into another gun. I am intrigued by a couple of different but ordinary non-1911 .45 ACPs but am thus far manfully resisting the temptation.

These are direct from Magnum Research. I think you can send in a barrel and have them added on.

I found these to be a lot better and more functional than the porting they offer now.

Sort of a different take. Was checking out and completing the form for a different gun and saw the F.I.E. Titan II in 32 acp for $100. Absolutely nothing practical about it other than cheap ( yeah, probably still paid too much 10 years ago or so). Staple gun trigger but it does eat those little boolits.

I guess my GP100 in 22lr isn't that practical but I really wanted it.

Yep, all the time. Now I want the new Sig 226 X Carry Legion,just because. Everytime I think ok, I’m done now, I see one I suddenly really want, lol.

Yes bought a Walther PPK in 32 ACP. Pretty to look at and fondle. That’s about it.

A reasonable argument could be made that all my guns are for no practical reason. I don't hunt, shoot competitively or carry one for a living. I don't even shoot anymore, at least not regularly.


Now, in the spirit of the op, I bought a double barrel coach gun just because I could and I thought it was cool. Don't know if my shoulder will agree, but...

The fact that most of us are opening and reading this just proves that we all do the same -
Some of the telltale signs:
If you opened this to see what everyone else is buying and what you missed - you have the disease
If you've lost count of how many holsters you have.......
If you've spent hours trying to find a missing part, piece, or pin, (and found enough spares to build a whole new gun)...
If you opened just to see if there were pictures - you have it
If you opened to see what you already have to compared to what else you need ....
or, if you opened to make sure you didn't miss a new or rare model or caliber....

It does not end

I bought a 375 Ruger, when I hardly ever have a need for my 300 WSM. Over the years I’ve gone lighter while hunting, smaller cartridge, shorter barrel, lighter gun.

I guess I just want to be ready when the African critters escape the sanctuary.

Pretty much every gun I’ve purchased after my first handgun, first shotgun, and first rifle have been for totally impractical reasons. I just wanted them.

And that’s the best reason of all.

Almost 10 years ago now, I bought a Browning A-Bolt Medallion. It’s not that I needed it and it’s too pretty to ever use for hunting or what not, I just always remember wanting one going back to childhood so when one of the local gun shops was having a Black Friday blowout, I saw it and said what the heck. I still haven’t scoped it and fired it, but I plan to rectify that soon. I love it for what it is, but it definitely was not a needed or even a particularly practical acquisition.

I got to be a big fan of Larry Correia's Monster Hunter International sci-fantasy series, read every one.
In one of the last ones before I had to start reading spin-offs like John Ringo's Monster Hunter Memoirs and Correia's Grimnoir series, a character had the use of a Carl Gustav 8.4 cm man-portable recoilless rifle.

I bought a Browning A-Bolt Medallion in 1989 and have been deer hunting with it ever since. I took three deer with it the past season.

I put a new scope on it this year, needed more light for my aging eyes, and gave my original Redfield 5-Star scope to a member here.

Almost every one except the CCW pistol I carried in a given time frame.

I've currently got the itch for a Beretta 1301 despite the fact that I'm not into gun games and my old 870 has proven 100% successful as a house gun (sits in the safe with no actual uses) for the past 25 years.

Yeah, basically all of them.

There is absolutely zero practical reason for me to own a single Class III item (being the coolest guy at the range doesn't count) but real transferrable examples of the BAR and M60 are on my bucket list.

All of my defensive needs could be competently served by a single CCW pistol and a single AR15. (Fine, a primary and an alternate, and maybe even a tertiary). All of my hunting needs could be met with a rifle or two and a shotgun or two.

I've got plenty more options than that!

The new Smith and Wesson Model 17 Mountain Gun is on my list now. I have absolutely no need for another 22 but damn I want one.
