Hello all! First time SIG owner, with used 220SAO. The frame is made in Germany and the slide is stainless with the single, solid roll pin. I didn't care for the single action so I bought parts to convert it back to DA/SA. Now when I pull the trigger back(double action) if I pull it slow enough it will "click" into single action and stay in single action until I pull the trigger or decock. Another odd thing is when there is a round in the chamber, no magazine in, and I shake it side to side I can hear the round rattle around in the chamber. Is it safe to shoot like this? Thanks for any help, I see this community has tons of knowledgeable members.

I’ll let someone more knowledgeable answer, but I wanted to say welcome to the forum. Since you state that the rattle is when you have a round in the chamber, you have probably tried it without a round in the chamber, but I just wanted to ask. Sigs are known for more or less slide rattle, although I don’t think the P220 is the worst perpetrator. I can say that it is abnormal for the hammer to stay set after a partial DA pull. I’d get that checked, but I doubt it’s dangerous other than I wouldn’t counting it staying cocked- it could release and fire at any time.

I have a couple of older P220s, '93 & '94. The '93 is from before the hammer reset spring was added to the mix and it does the "click thing" when pulling on the DA trigger (the '94 does not). So, I ask, did you do anything to the trigger reset spring when you did the trigger swap?

The way to check cartridge fit in the chamber is with the barrel out of the slide.

Some space for side to side movement of the cartridge is normal, and actually required for proper functioning under less than ideal conditions. I.e., if the chamber gets dirty with firing residues or even environmental dirt, etc., a combat handgun needs to still function and an excessively-tight chamber could cause chambering or extraction failures.

What you can check is proper headspace with your ammunition. When dropped freely into the chamber the cartridge base should be about as shown, slightly below the barrel hood extension.





And FWIW, once a question is posted one place on the forum, additional posts with the same question in a different section are discouraged. If absolutely necessary for some reason, sometimes a request to admin will get the thread moved, but it is much more likely that any question will be seen here than in the Armorer section that doesn't get much traffic by comparison.

Sigfreund-Just checked the cartridge in the barrel and it looks just like your pic. Going shooting soon and we'll see how she does.

And although I don’t have any special status here to be handing out praise or criticisms, I will commend you for the title of your first post. You told us who you were, that you had questions, and about what gun. That’s all too rare, and if it had been something like “P220” and nothing else like we see all the time, I wouldn’t have even opened the thread.

Shot it the other day with the DA/SA parts and the SA pull is very heavy, accuracy was low and left. Changed it back to SAO and low and behold accuracy was greatly improved! Reliability was great, no issues with ejection or anything. Might have to get some sights as the SIGlite night sights are dead. I'll post some pics this weekend.

The low and left is bc you’re using too little of the trigger finger. I found that placing the crease of the first digit on the trigger with the heavy trigger pull (like a revolver) in the double action helped.

A lot of instructors say to use the pad of the first part of the trigger, and that’s all well and good for a single action pistol, but a double action has a lot of pull and fighting that will make you pull which puts the rounds low and left .

The heavy pull when you swapped out pars may be due to them not being smooth or worn in. Keep at it.
