SR-71 Blackbird Crews Had These Custom Smith & Wesson Model 41 Pistols Built For Them

Back in the 1960s, the Air Force ordered a small batch of special Model 41 pistols for SR-71 Blackbird aircrew survival kits.

The question of what kind of gun should be issued to aircrew for survival, should they be brought down for whatever reason, potentially behind enemy lines, is one that air forces have long grappled with. The highly specific demands of the role, coupled with the fact that the gun needs to be compact enough to fit in a cramped cockpit (and in many cases, on the aircrew themselves), mean that there have been a wide variety of solutions to the problem, some more successful than others.

Of course, for an aircraft as extraordinary as the U.S. Air Force’s SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, it would make sense that a highly specialized aircrew survival weapon might be developed for it...

Interesting but I don't see anything that says the Oxford Illuminated Gun Sight was USAF. This one installed by a gunsmith.

I wonder if any one of the crews ever fired a single shot from one of these?

An interesting gun that I had never heard of despite my fondness for the model 41.
Although I understand the rationale for that type of weapon, that the M41 was chosen when other options would have been available strikes me as a sort of “Because we can” deal. Who’s going to object for the best for that program?

Regarding the value of such a weapon for personal defense, as I recall during the Vietnam War Bat 21 event in which a navigator evaded capture for many days, he ended up killing a civilian who might have revealed his presence. If something like that were necessary, it would be best to not advertise one’s location with an audible gunshot.

Too bad the suppressor wasn’t described more.

If I was shot down over the middle of the USSR, I'd much rather have that than a .38 snubbie. Hell, if I was anywhere, I'd rather have that. A suppressed .22 is one of the most useful weapons that exist.

I doubt it; far as I know no SR-71s were ever lost. But there's probably a lot of related intel surrounding those missions that's still classified

Considering the extreme caliber Wink of training Sled Driver pilots underwent, probably more than a couple mags down range would be a safe bet…

That was also an era when basic firearms handling/marksmanship were more ‘common knowledge’ than today.

I've been wanting to do a threaded barrel for my Model 41 for a while now and this just ups the desire. What's most interesting to me is the slide lock at the rear. This is basically a super accurate .22 Hush Puppy. That's friggin' cool. As for how useful one of these would be? I mean, as a game getter, you're set for small game. .22 is a ubiquitous caliber.

Someone needs to get one of these into Ian McCullom's hands.

I found this quite interesting. A pistol like that makes a lot of sense, and of course, now I want one!

You knew full well what he said was true yet you decided to act like a coquettish young 16 girl at the ball. “Oh, did I say that” as you flutter your eyelids. “I have no way of knowing how blackbird crews” were trained. It’s not even close to what he said. Society. As a whole. In the 60’s.

I got no problem with arguments. I think purposefully acting like he said something he clearly wasn’t saying isn’t arguing. It’s being I’ll let you fill in that blank.

I have information that one might have crashed on takeoff or landing.
