Keeping the economy moving since 1964 |
A friend of mine is selling some of his possessions, among them a Colt Python, circa 1980, 6" ported barrel, blued, .357 magnum. It is gorgeous and he's offered it to me for $2,000.00. It looks to be in very good condition. Aside from the substantial cost, I don't own anything in .357 magnum (or 38) so if acquired I'd need to buy ammo for it. I think I'll be passing on it....sigh. ----------------------- You can't fall off the floor.

You do understand that ammunition is fairly easy to acquire... --------------------------- My hovercraft is full of eels.

I can't tell if this is tongue in cheek. lol They sell ammo by the box, it is a surmountable problem. Only thing I am not a fan of is I wouldn't want a ported barrel version. I would prefer the standard.

If I'm lukewarm on something, even though it's a great gun at a good price, I would pass. And that has happened many times. Q

I have a few .38Spl/.357Mag options in both handguns and long guns. I would 100% pass on a $2000 blue Colt Python. Nothing to even think about. Thank you, but no thank you is a perfectly acceptable response.

I agree re: the ported barrel. ----------------------- You can't fall off the floor.

Not sure the price qualifies as a ‘friend discount’. I’m also not big on ported barrels, not that my opinion matters much. I’d rather a Ruger Security-Six at $450, maybe hard to find at that price now.

The only 100% reason to pass on this, is the ported barrel. After that, "unported," I'd still want to know/see more for that price. Ye Olde Colt Python? Fuck yeah. Anything not factory stock? Run, do not walk. Buy a new one... cuz that's a thing now... Arc. ______________________________ "Like a bitter weed, I'm a bad seed"- Johnny Cash "I'm a loner, Dottie. I easily sold my 1977 4-inch blue Colt Python for $2000 at a gun show 2 years ago.

These days $2K is about the average base level pricing for a shooter-quality, unmodified blued Python. We've come off the speculative high prices of the past few years and some resemblance of sanity has returned to the market. The sluggish Biden economy has played a role, as have the quality of the current production SS Pythons. -MG

My father in law has a Python he bought new back in the late 70's that has never been fired. I've only laid eyes on it once and I don't remember if it's SS or nickel but I do remember that it's silver. Said he's turned down $5k for it. I get it in his will, if he doesn't sell it first. Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago.

Probably nickel if it’s late 70’s .

The ported barrel was also a concern for me. I did not research to see if porting was ever "from the factory", but in this case it was an after market job. I've passed on it. ----------------------- You can't fall off the floor.

personally I would pass on any original Python, they have a well earned reputation for shooting out of time and finding a gunsmith who can re-time an original Python is a bit more than difficult. I'll also note that the primary symptom of the timing going "soft" on a Python is a loss in accuracy which happens well before you start shaving lead. I've stopped counting.
