Last week I sold a Canik TP9 Elite Combat with the sole purpose of upgrading to the Canik SFX Rival-S (steel frame). That pistol is $1,000. I thought the Rival-S came with a factory compensator. (It doesn't.)

Then I thought, if I'm spending that much money, what else should I consider?

I still want an HK45 and a big bore revolver.
Edited to add: I also want an IWI Tavor TS-12 shotgun.

What other fun pistols fit into this budget? This one will be a range toy.

May not be what you’re looking for but me personally I’d consider a 226 SAO Legion ora S&W 69 in 3 or 4 inch barrrel depending on what your intended purpose is for the bigger bore revolver. It’s a great time to be a gun buyer, there are so many great choices out there.

Not trying to go outside classified rules, but if you were considering an H&K 45c I have one that has just been sitting in my safe for a few years.

CZ Shadow 2 if you don't mind a steel frame hammer fired semi auto pistol. They are going for around $1000 at some retailers online with the optic ready version a bit higher. Good luck!

I would second the CZ. A 75D-PCR with a pro kit from Cajun Gun Works is about $1k and it's suitable for EDC. If you want a range gun the SP-01 Shadow or Phantoms are in the same neighborhood. For fun range time my Sig, Glocks, S and W, Walther all sit in the safe. The CZs are addictive.

CZ Shadow 2 or a nice used Dan Wesson 1911 would be good. Or a Wilson/LTT Beretta 92.

Check Gunbroker for used deals there. I have seen many good deals lately. There are a few HK45 pistols on there for cheap,(example-less than $600 for a Tactical model), with buy it now prices from actual ffl dealers. I am contemplating my next pistol to get on there. I have bought a few this year alone as the deals were too good to miss.

You can do a Live Free Armory Apollo 11 for under $1K to step into the 2011 world, and they been actively improving the guns since release.

Shadow Systems XR920P has that non-threaded compensator and is about that same price.

The Canik TTI has a compensator. Can be had in the $900-1000 range on GB. Some good reviews on youtube.

My buddy just picked up the TTI this weekend and loves it. I was not as enamored. Easy choice for me… HK45, as that is my next gun. Although I am also looking hard at the Beretta APX.

If it were me in your situation I'd also seriously consider the Shadow 2. A truly brilliant pistol. No it doesn't come with a comp like the Rival-S but frankly you really don't need it with either gun.

Canik SFX Rival-S

As a pure range-toy, I am going to go out there and say 'get a big bore revolver'.

As a pure range-toy, I recommend 6-7.5" barrel lengths. 5.5" isn't bad, but- if it isn't a carry piece, the extra weight helps with recoil.

I am seeing .44mag for around $1/round near me.
.45long colt is comparable to price of .44mag, but not as many options near me- and most are cowboy action loads [light].
.454Casull is going for around $2.80-3.00/round.
.460S&W is going for around $4/round.

I like the Ruger Super Redhawk in .44mag, with 7.5" barrel. It isn't as attractive as the S&W Model 29/629. However, it can handle a hotter round, as the same frame can be had in .454Casull or .480Ruger.

If you like the cowboy look, I'd go for a Super Blackhawk in 7.5" barrel and .44mag.

But, I like the idea of not having to worry about grabbing the 'wrong box' of .44mag ammo and getting something that is too powerful for my revolver.

Sigs and Non-Sigs: I enjoy having options!

I was shooting with a lady the other week, one of the few times she has ever shot a firearm. She lives alone now, wanted to lean a few of the vary basics. Yes, I told her about classes and training gear mostly for now women shooters.

The point is, she liked my 22 revolver the best, less blast & recoil.

I see you mentioned ‘range toy’, but what else do you have? OBTW, I like my HK-45c more than the full sized version. There is occasional CC involved.

Another vote for the Shadow II. Heavy enough to make the 9mm a very easy shooting round, excellent magazine capacity in a Free State and the price/value is excellent.

BTW, for about double that 1000 dollars you can get a Tanfoglio CZ75 action based Stock II, a Race Ready Competition gun with an optics ready slide. Note Tanfoglio offers CZ75 design pistols ranging from 750 to over 4000 dollars and calibers of 9mm, 10mm, 40SW, and 45 ACP.

Agree, Shadow 2 would be a great option.

And a couple of out of the box suggestions -

Smith and Wesson 610 revolver is a great 10mm option. Heavy N-Frame really reduces recoil (particularly if you go with a 6" barrel). Also, give you the option of shooting S&W .40's. Mine is an absolute tack driver. And right in your price range.

Grand Power X-Caliber. A couple of hundred dollars under your budget. Soft shooting. Excellent trigger. Good ergonomics. Nice sights. Mine has been accurate and reliable - although I recently got into a discussion with someone on another forum who has had some issues with his.

Wow! This has been a fun thread. Thank you for the excellent suggestions.

Several have asked about the "toys" that I have. I have:
HK P7M8, P7M13, USP
Sig P225
Glock 20 with mild mods
.50 BMG
PRS-style custom rifle
A couple of shotguns
Only one revolver, a .22 Heritage
CCW options are solved

I should edit the original post to include another "toy": IWI Tavor TS-12 12 gauge

You mention that you have just one revolver; I’d suggest a nice, old S&W Model 28 “Highway Patrolman” in .357 Magnum (with which you can also enjoy .38 Special ammo). A pinned and recessed classic S&W that can still be had within your stated dollar-range.

My personal vote would be for one with a 4-inch barrel but there is also the six-inch barrel option.

I recently put together a P226 from parts, upgraded a couple of things and added a red dot. I believe I have right around $1000 in it, and feel it was money well spent. I'd do the same again if I was starting over...I love that gun more and more every time I shoot it.

Were I looking for a factory turnkey option, I'd probably go with the Shadow 2. It's an excellent buy for the money.
