So I have German P228 and the prefix is a "B". I know the P226's start with a "U". Do the letters indicate the model number? Thanks

Yeah, in the early days.

G = P220
M = P225
U = P226
B = P228

P229 is a little different, starting with AA then AB, AC, AD, AE.....

To add to the list of 'classic' P-series SIGS:

S = P230
C = P245

And the ultimate 'classic' SIG:

P = P210

I always thought it was weird how the P229s and P239s didn't originally get single-letter prefixes like the SIGs before them. It's not like SIG was running out of letters in the alphabet. Big Grin

^^ It's a safe bet that adding the extra 'A' to the S/N prefix is meant to signify America, as in Made in USA, and distinguishes such Pistols from those Made in Germany.

Of course P226's got the 'UU' prefix, so Made in USA! Wink

This info should be added into the forums serial numbers list. Very informative and helpful.

Yup.

H signifies a rimfire P220.

K is usually reserved for prototypes, preproduction versions, and models designed for research.

If your classic Sig was made for the Italian market, a model specific CAT number will be stamped on it as well.

I know about the extra U used on earlier American-made frames (like UU for a P226 or AKU for a P229) and like you, I am also of the opinion that it stands for United States. But the first P229 frames and P239 frames were German-made and still didn’t have single-letter prefixes.

Good point.

The German P250s weren't given a single letter prefix either.

Exactly. That's their National Firearms Catalogue number required for all guns imported and made there, which was in effect from 1976 to the end of 2011, according to wiki.

Here is a 1986 P220 sold recently on GB with that CAT number.
