Ammo storage? Login/Join

Curious what others might be doing to store ammo/mags/other items..? Not looking to invest in a new full-blown safe, but definitely want something that [1] locks (to keep kids out) and [2] is freestanding. I used to rely on the steel cabinets from HD/Lowes, but the last one I bought (about 2-3 years ago) was considerably flimsy compared to the way they used to make them (not to mention the price on those suckers has skyrocketed). So, I'd want something stronger than that, but not a heavy safe. In most cases I just need a place to keep pistol ammo in retail boxes, as well as some metal or plastic ammo cans, but I also may put some bulk cases (i.e. 1000 rounds of 9mm) in there.

All my ammo and extra mags are stored in military surplus ammo cans.

If your wanting something heavy duty to store things in consider metal job site tool boxes. They are lockable have top lids for access and are open internally. Cost varies depending on size and quality.

I keep mine in ammo cans (or in sealed cardboard cases) on a series of sturdy freestanding metal shelves. But I have no need to lock mine up.

Since you apparently do, there are some options:

A) Most plastic ammo cans comes with holes for padlocks. Metal ammo cans can be retrofitted with lock kits for padlocks.

B) Plastic or metal tool/storage boxes often have either built in locks, or provisions for padlocks.

C) Do you have a storage room or closet that can be fitted with a lock?

I also use primarily ammo cans or just leave in the cardboard boxes a case of ammo comes in. These are in a locked closet. Just go to Home Depot, and you can get a basic lock set fairly cheap that will match the rest of your doors. Easy to swap out with just a screwdriver. Just make sure it is sized for an interior door.

I keep all mine in ammo cans. They are in a closet with my gun safes.

The closet has a lock and there is also a PTZ camera in the closet.

If anyone turns the closet light on, opens the closet door, or any movement is detected, I receive notification on my cell phone.

Ammo cans for me and kept the ammo in the cardboard boxes within the cans. You may not have the ability, but I store them in a locked closet.

Those work GREAT. Strong as hell, secure as hell, and good looking if you buy one with shiny paint. You can't beat them for ammo storage. As long as you're talking about a controlled environment.

The one you want may be the variety that opens with a top lid vs a side lid. The Home Depot versions are a very nice shiny orange color, very well finished, and the padlocks are not accessible via bolt cutters. And cheap too.

Yep many option for size and price.

Several options for long term storage are to use sealable ammo cans in the job site boxes and or then use a Goldenrod inside the job site box.

I keep most of mine in a cheapo Stack-On "safe" that you could break into with a screwdriver, but it's lockable and keeps kids out.

I keep all my ammo in 30cal ammo cans stacked on the floor in the closet in the MBR. We don’t have littles, but even so the MBR has a lock on the door and you could add one to the closet door.

I place ready to go ammo in a locking metal file cabinet in factory packaging. You can buy used file cabinets cheap and the drawers are on fairly stout roller tracks, they are also very deep and make access easy.
For long term storage I use steel and plastic ammo cans.
I place the ammo in vacuum sealed bags and then in the ammo can.

I bought a 60" Husky job box. Placed it next to my safe in the spare bedroom. Installed wheels so I can move it in the room if need be. It definately can't be rolled out of the room. Loaded or empty it would have to be turned upright to move it out. Not easy to do loaded or quickly while under surveillance of multiple cameras.

My ammo is all over the house and garage. Most of it in 50 Cal surplus ammo cans, and the rest in still sealed cardboard cases. But these are in closets, guest room closets, I have a Husky job box in the garage, dining room closet, hell, under my sofa in my office. And I still have a box of assorted boxes of .380acp and .38 special wadcutters on my office floor from Target Sports, it hasn't moved in a month Big Grin

(water got under the floor, made the sub floor swell. So there's 3x4 feet of 3/4" plywood on the spot, with ammo cans of 9mm ammo, boxes 45 bullets and .58 round ball on it)
