Revolver caliber cartridge interchangability
Typically a revolver that is chambered for a magnum can accept a less powerful cartridge like a special. This is what I came up with. The more powerful cartridge on the left which can accept a lesser powered cartridge on the right.
.475 Linebaugh <--- .480 Ruger *corrected*
.460 S&W <--- 45 colt + 454 casull
454 casull <--- 45 colt
.45 colt <--- .410 shotgun
(45 ACP <--- 45 colt) **delete**
10 mm <--- 40 S&W
44 mag <--- 44 special
357 mag <--- 38 special
327 fed <--- 32 mag

.327 Fed Mag can accept .32 H&R Mag, .32 S&W long and .32 S&W short and even .32 Auto.

I believe your 45 ACP <--- 45 Colt entry is reversed.

Not only is it reversed, it is incomplete and misleading.

In a S/A revolver, like a Ruger Blackhawk, separate cylinders are used.

In a D/A revolver chambered in .45 Colt, like a Model 25-7, 25-9 25-13 etc. in order to shoot .45 ACP the cylinder needs to be machined to accept moon clips. You can't go the other way, i.e. chambered for .45 ACP and desire to shoot .45 Colt - not gonna happen. You could have a separate cylinder fitted.

Adios,

Don't forget .38 Long Colt and .38 Short Colt beneath .38 Special.
More than a few competition shooters use the .38 shorts. I load them for light loads in my lightweight revolvers with short ejector rods.

The 357 Magnum can also fire 38 Special, 38 Long Colt and 38 Short Colt

The 45 Long Colt can also fire the 45 Short Colt and 45 Cowboy (I think there is one more, I just can not recall it)

You can shoot 22 ‘WRF’ in a 22 Mag chamber.

Would the .45 Auto Rim work or is the rim too thick?

I have thought about getting a 327 mag just for the novelty of it taking all the other cartridges, but then I remember that all of them are pretty obscure so it's not really much of a plus.

If you reload it’s an absolute blast of a gun to own.

The 45 confusion came from the S&W Governor or the Taurus Judge.

You have the .480 and .475 reversed. The .475 Linebaugh is the more powerful and longer cartridge. A .475 Linebaugh will not fit in the shorter .480 Ruger chamber.

You are correct Blaque---that makes the .480 Ruger a .475 special Smile

For the 357 Magnum you forgot to mention the 38 Long Colt and the 38 Short Colt.

Note the 38 Short Colt was a healed .375 diameter bullet but the 38 Short Colt case can be used for the 357 Family because, except for length it's dimensions are nearly identical to the 38 Long Colt case. As a result the Short Colt case can be sized to produce a 0.357 caliber load with a case length of 19.4mm.

As for why one would wish to do that, it's all about Competition. A moon clip of those long 357 Magnums can be rather fussy to load and it will slow reloading. Put your loads in a case that is nearly identical to the 9mm Parabellum and you have a moon clip that will fall into the cylinder. Another plus is you can load with a 125 grain bullet using data for a 124 grain 9mm Parabellum. BTW, due to the higher pressure generated this particular type of load must ONLY be used in 357 Magnum revolvers.

I've stopped counting.

Not much difference in power but typically a revolver in 45 acp can also shoot 45 auto-rim.

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole...

475 Linebaugh Max - 475 Linebaugh - 480 Ruger - 475 Special - 475 Cooper (and IIRC there's another one too)

The 357 Magnum can also fire 38 Special, 38 Long Colt and 38 Short Colt

You can stick the 357 Maximum & 357 Super Magnum (pretty much the same thing) and 360 DW ahead of those.

quote:
44 mag <--- 44 special

445 Super Mag ahead of that.

414 Super Magnun, 41 Magnum, 41 Special.

10mm Magnum in front of the 10 and 40.

And of course, just because you CAN, doesn't make it a good idea.
