Left-Handed, NOT Left-Winged! |
I hate "combat" .22LR's as they never really work right. Ruger Mark II with a slab barrel and VQ trigger, Sig Hammerli Trailside, or a Model 41. Once you shoot target pistols that can put 10 rounds into a less than an inch at 25 yards, hard to go back. I had a Mosquito and traded it for a Beretta 87T plus some cash. My mosquito had the loose barrel. Tightening the cross screw led to one getting stuck and starting to strip the soft head of the screw. Attempting to remove the screw made it worse. I had do drill out and slot the head with a Dremel cutoff wheel so I could get a flat head on it to remove it. Pretty soft metal. Luckily the frame wasn't damaged. Bad design assembled with lousy parts. Also had the typical failures to fire and failures to feed. Got a new screw, installed it, traded it off. Beretta was Ok, stupid long trigger overtravel though. I think I bought my second Trailside after that as a backup because of the small parts breakage issue on those. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Lefty Sig,

Well its with FedEx headed to Exeter, we will see what will go on with it. If they can't fix (i.e replace) the slide I'm not sure what happens then????? I will keep everyone posted. While the Sig Mosquito isn't nor will ever be the best 22 handgun out there, its been used several times for people to shoot the 1st rounds ever out of a handgun. Mines been pretty reliable. I use the Golden Bullet and as long as its cleaned and lubed and the mags are oil'ed a bit it seems to function pretty well. But I really do need to get a revolver .22 I think the S&W 617 would be a good fit. "da evil Count Glockula."-Para

It is just a rebranded GSG / ATI Firefly. I'm willing to bet that you will get a slide via SIG from GSG.

Make up a story about how the Mosquito sacrificed its life to save yours?

Having a few SIGs in my possession, I just HAD to have the Mosquito shortly after it was introduced. Mine has been a jam-o-matic from day 1, no matter the ammo. Because it has the same code of arms as other SIGs, I use it as a training aid for clearing malfunctions during classes. It's been invaluable in that aspect as I'm confident that the student firing it will experience a problem. Easy to clear in a .22, but this directly translated to a related problem with other SIGs or semi-autos! I will never part with my Mosquito!!!!

You shouldn’t hate “Combat” 22’s. You are just buying the wrong ones. If you buy a Beretta 87. It will just work. With all types of ammo. One of mine probably has more rounds through it than any 2 or 3 guns combined that I own. It almost always makes it into the range bag. It’s as reliable as 22’s can get. Same can be said for my 2 Kadet kits. Run like rabbits. Caveat that I screwed that up a but when I modded my 22 mule frame with competition parts but that’s on me. (Light strikes are more prevalent now). On a normal frame my Kadets don’t miss. I finally broke a pin (barrel retaining pin) in one of them, that is the only breakage in 20 years.

They make a good 22. I’m quite happy with the Sig 226-22. Have a 9mm upper for her too. I looked at the Mosquito but heard too many negative things about it.

Same with mine right up until the day I let it go. Traded my jam-master rimfire along with a couple of other rather questionably chosen guns towards a SIG SHR-970 with an old but brilliantly clear Leupold gold ring scope. That glass is still very clear years later. One of my smarter moves, especially so after the exceedingly dumb decisions that propagated those horrid long-gone guns, the GSG/SIG being at the top of that list of shame. Sorry about your Mosquito, but cracking slides are a well known and documented reality with many of those awful pot metal pistols. -MG

Well got some bad but unsurprisingly news about my Mosquito. Its dead. SIG emailed me informing me that its unrepairable, and they have no extra parts for them. They asked for a bill of sale which oddly I kept purchased new on 9-11-2006 from here in Columbus. They have offered a 2022 (9mm) or a P320 Compact for compensation, I already own both. This message has been edited. Last edited by: ThankGod4Sig, "da evil Count Glockula."-Para

Sad to hear, but, yeah: Not terribly surprising.

As I already have a 320C, I'd opt for a 2022. Can't hurt to have a spare of either. I'd say you're coming out ahead with either, over the Mosquito. IIRC, they were like $299 around here when they were an active product. 2022s were $499 & 320Cs were about the same. The Enemy's gate is down.

Thank you Very little ![]() |
Sounds like a pretty good trade up.... Wish I'd kept the Mosquito that I had, it ran fine, because using the correct ammo makes a difference. I'd trade you for it LOL

I'm sorry to hear the news. I know I came off like a smartass at the start of this thread, but I was genuinely hoping to learn that they'd found a way to support those Mosquitos that are still in the wild.

I have .22LR slide conversion for my 220. Have just enough rounds through it to know it prefers higher velocity rounds over the ordinary bulk .22LR. But no other issues. Any word on the metal quality of the conversion kits when they offered them? Here it is: ![]() --------------------------------- I know my nation best. That's why I despise it the most. Wow - I wouldn't have guessed that... Guess I should shoot my Mosquito more (I don't think I have more that 500 rounds through mine). I'd take a P320 in trade for a broken (or even LNIB) Mosquito ![]()

I bought a Mosquito new in 2010. At around 400 rounds I had an out of battery experience. It was only a couple of months old and Sig replaced the gun no questions asked. I have 1255 rounds thru the second gun, but never felt safe shooting it and have not shot it since 2013. I’ll never shoot it again and will be selling it. In the photo below you can see the brass still in the chamber and the finish burned off the inside of the slide. The head of the case left a dent in my forehead and my whole face was peppered with brass and unburnt powder. Shooting glasses saved both eyes. ![]() --------------- Gary Will Fly for Food... and more Ammo Mosquito Lubrication Video If Guns Cause Crime, Mine Are Defective.... Ted Nugent

I had one briefly and came to the same conclusion. Shame, I was hoping it was going to be a keeper. I gave up on it after about 400 rounds of various ammo and nothing but problems.
