I figured I would chime in, being a new member. I recently picked up a West German P228.

Hi Uriah!

I have a used P239 all stainless I bought just yesterday here in Grand Rapids, MI. It was marked by the dealer as "rare" having been a special order from Michigan Police Supply Co.

The serial number is S4-504xx (I checked the S4
under high magnification, and it is definitely a "4" and not an "A"). I sadly noted that the
Sig case did not accompany the P239 and the dealer said he will attempt find it. It is ALL
stainless, and shows very little "smiley" wear
on the .40S&W barrel.

I guess my next effort will be to phone Sig to see whether they will confirm this was a special run for some law enforcement agency customer of Michigan Police Supply, Lansing.

This list hasn't been updated in a year?

I'll get on it. Currently updated to page 16.

Every time I intend to start where I left off, I get caught up with something else.

If I am correct on this, a 220 W. German with the serial # beginning with G 254 would be a 1995 or 96.

Does that sound right ?

Correct. Looks like it falls right on the line, and could be either.

Thank you Uriah. The one in question happens to be a two-tone.

SIG put out some excellent 220's in that era.

My very early American-made 220-1 , G257xxx, was made in November of 1995. That info comes straight from SIG.

Picked up a nice one: It's marked: SIG Sauer, made in W. Germany marked JA, P220 serial number BDA 45 395RP 7377 in 7.65mm Para. Like new. Very close to the last one (Eusty Dave's)
listed under Browning but I thought those were marked Browning, not SIG Sauer.

Oh, and the frame has a 4 digit number, 1065 highlighted in white, under the last four of the regular sn. Any idea what this is?

It's an Italian NFC number:

"Italian laws prescribed that any rifled-barreled firearm imported or manufactured in Italy after 1976 should have been identified by a progressive catalogue number, assigned by a commission composed of government officials and representatives from the Italian arms industries. The role of the commission was to decide if a rifled firearm should be classified either a war firearm (arma da guerra) or a common firearm (arma comune da sparo). The national firearms catalogue described the characteristics of the weapon (barrel and overall length, number of rounds in the magazine and other technical specifications) that cannot legally be altered without resubmitting the weapon to the commission. Common firearms with certain features (sights, type of action) can be classified as sporting firearms (armi sportive), which can be used for self defence as an extrema ratio (es. during a home invasion) but which can not be carried for said purpose.

The said catalogue and the related commission has been abolished since 2012, due to the economic stability law, approved 12 November 2011; its place has been taken by the Banco Nazionale di Prova (National Proof House) in Gardone Val Trompia, which admits or rejects firearms pending importation, at the same time maintaining an electronic record of the characteristics (long or short firearm, European firearm category, manufacturer, magazine capacity, etc.) of the firearms permitted for sale."

My P220 in 7.65 Parabellum has the same mark, which means it was destined for the Italian gun market, as was yours. I don't know what the law is these days, but at one time in Italy, civilians couldn't own 9x19mm pistols. Hence, a lot of .30 Luger stuff made its way to Italy, and many 9x19 pistols had their chamber lengthened, to become the 9x21mm, and thus circumvent the law.
