Obscure Sig P226 score
The Sig P226 force on force Simunitions trainer. While passing through Sigs at broker I stumbled across this one. I’ve seen several different Sim guns on broker of varying styles and conditions but this one appeared flawless. I put a low bid on it and to my surprise won it for $368. When it arrived I was hoping for very good condition. It turned out to be near perfect. Having been a Sims instructor for many years, I was shocked at the condition. Nary a blemish; these things usually get pretty battered from use in realistic training scenarios.

For those that don’t know, Sim guns have been around for a while now. Early units were mostly kits you could install on working guns. Some departments wanted stand alone guns so folks like Sig and Glock jumped on board with factory training weapons. The thing is, with Sig anyway, everything on the pistol came off their line except for the Sims parts. Same frames, slides, even recoil guide and spring. In this kit, the only thing not Sig is the barrel, extractor, and that is it.

The locking insert has a tack welded tab that facilitates feeding sim rounds so a standard barrel can’t be inserted… until you switch out the insert. All you need is a complete upper in 9mm, .40, or .357SIG (and maybe some blue accented micarta grips) and you have an interesting conversation piece. I happen to have a brand new Navy upper sitting around so I’m just a locking insert away.

The factory tag- some lazy property guy gave me the wrong case. At least there were 3 mags.

The internals- everything is factory. Note the locking insert.

What it eats

Impossible to chamber and fire live ammo

Certainly something you don't see everyday. First time I've seen or heard of one.

Thanks for posting!

When I was a kid we used BB guns for force on force.

Stupid, but we got away with it for years, BB gun fights 2 or 3 times a week in the summer.

Good training, too.

I took two force on force classes at the sig academy and the guns we used with frangible (sp?) ammo were not blue but your basic black... I remember having a choice between P226 and P229.

Those guns were undoubtedly standard guns with the barrel and round guide plate added. We had several P228’s set up like that. Painted the grips and mag plate blue to denote as training guns.

it's been a couple of years and I could be wrong about the pistols being black... I do know the ammo was different than that pictured above... in fact I think I have a picture of it.... here it is beside a standard 9mm round.

Very cool. Forgive my ignorance, but can it be made to fire real ammo by replacing some of the parts or is it strictly for simunition only?

Yes. All parts that are not produced by Simunitions are right off Sigs assembly line. In my case, all that is needed is a slide assembly, which waits in a box, and a standard locking insert. It could actually be done with a standard barrel, extractor, and locking insert, but I like the idea of a quick change Sim upper.

And it looks like those are standard P226 9mm magazines?

Yup. They are standard issue USA mags which was probably what came with all Sigs from the factory back in 2014.

Quick update- switched out my poor man’s Equinox .40 upper to see how it looks. All function tests fine. To make the change from Sims, all you need is a locking insert, barrel, and extractor if you are not simply switching out the whole upper as shown.

Love the shade of blue on that frame. Cool find!
