Have a Zavasta Tokarev that shoots very low as in 7 inches low at 40 feet. Checked my grip high so do not believe it's me. Have in past years owned an old East-Block version Tokatev that shot at point of aim. The front sight sits very low. If I used a dremel to cut the rear sight notch down a bit would that help? Any other suggestions welcome.

No. You're lining up the top of the front sight with the top of the rear sight. That's all that matters.

If you're saying that you might lower the notch in the rear in order to see the front sight after you've lowered it- I don't know- it sounds like you're running out of adjustment room.

Did you have anyone else shoot it. Seems way off and seems weird. Just an idea.

Good idea to let someone else to shoot it. It's odd that my other handguns do not have the way low hole punching in a target. Might have to find a gunsmith to replace the sights. Inexpensive handgun that has a lot utility, good to travel when flying. If it is swiped no major financial loss. The 7.62x25 round is handy when on the road.

Wait, are you lining up the top of the front sight with the bottom of the notch?

Have you tried multiple cartridges? Different bullet weights and different powder loads can create different results. There does not seem to be too many weight options for that bullet but if you have only tried one manufacturers load I’d first suggest trying others to see if POI changes.

Something's not adding up here.

You say the front sight sits very low, but an overly low front sight would cause the pistol to shoot high.

A front sight that was too tall could cause the pistol to shoot low.




Therefore, I suspect your sight picture is what's off here, especially with your question about grinding down the rear sight notch even deeper.

As mentioned by Para and BuddyChryst, how are you lining up the front and rear sights?

Are you lining up the top of the front sight with the top of the back sight "ears"? That's how it should work. Changing the depth of the notch would have no effect here, because the position of the tops of the front and rear sights wouldn't be changed by altering the notch depth.

Or are you lining up the top of the front sight with the bottom of the rear sight notch? That is not right, and would definitely cause you to shoot low. And if that's what you're doing, lowering the rear notch to allow you to bury the front sight even further down would only result in your shots hitting even lower.
