Glock's model 39 .45 GAP seems to be a devisive topic, nevertheless I'm considering one. Hoping for opinions re the (a) functionality of the weapon and (b) availability of ammo. Concealed carry purpose. Currently carrying a P365. Thanks for any and all opinions!

Welcome to the forum. I will be following this thread: Local store has Glock model 38 on consignment for $400.00 (may make an offer for $375 if I procced. One of the online surplus stores (magwarehouse?) had new Glock mags for $23.00. Holsters are my biggest concern. I have brass but would have to get dies and 200 grain .45 caliber bullets. PC

When I was a cop in NC, my buddy bought a Glock 39 in 45GAP, he used it for a backup gun. We had to fire 50day/50night on it to carry it. His was fine. I shot it a few times..just didn’t like the ammo (I reload a few too many calibers). But Joel bought two cases of ammo from the local gun store and never looked back. He moved to another department and still has it today. To me it’s a good round, although somewhat hard to find, so buy in case not boxes, learn to reload if you don’t and you’ll be GTG. My father in law has a 38. Never had a problem with it that I'm aware of. Like most Glocks, I just don't shoot it well. Ammo availability, locally, is very scarce, there was only 1 shop [inside a large pawn shop] that carried it. Otherwise, you're ordering it online. The Enemy's gate is down.

A buddy has one and it's a Glock...it just works. I believe it'll fit most G30 holsters, but I'm not 100% on that. Finding ammo will be a significant challenge, and even if you reload, you'll want to collect every last piece of your brass, which is a PITA with an autoloader. Functionally, I'm sure it'll do whatever you ask it to do. Logistically, you might be better served by a G30 or G36 in .45 ACP.

I had an interest back in the day and seems like the slide was wider than g17 et al, but grip frame similar to g17 width, so I believe correct on G30 holsters but I think g17 size mag pouches worked. I could be wrong but it seems to be correct.

Similar to why I swapped back from 357Sig to 9mm Loved the 357, but cost & availability of 9mm won it over. The Enemy's gate is down.

I have a Glock 37 that is a retired PA State police pistol. I’ve only put a few hundred rounds through it but it is a nice shooter. No complaints at all other than sourcing ammo.

I'll echo Pete K. Bought my G37 when I retired from PSP. I always liked it, and statistically, the cartridge did what it was supposed to compared to the Beretta 40's we had before them, of course the LONG double action trigger pull was mostly to blame I think. Always wanted a 39 and if I found one on the cheap, I'll probably pick it up. But..... The 365 you're currently carrying carries twice as much, is smaller, and probably easier to shoot. Holsters, think G29/30, though leather will stretch so you could go G26/27/33 size. Mags are G17/19/26 size but with wider feed lips and followers obviously, and hold a lot less.

I had a Glock in .45 GAP. I let a buddy of mine shoot it once and he wanted to buy it off of me. It's good for those who like the grip size of the model 19 (I don't) and want a 45.

No real experience with the.45 GAP outside of a few magazines through one. So I can’t speak too much for the round. I don’t see boxes of the GAP stacked up on the shelves. As far as the G-39- it’s a Glock. Pull the trigger, it’s going to go “Bang” and put that chunk of lead where you want it, unless someone mucked it up before you got it. ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. Shot one a little bit when it first came out. I thought it offered no real advantage (other than a smaller grip) over 45ACP. Now, if I was to think of buying 45GAP, my concern would ammo costs and availability. End of Earth: 2 Miles Upper Peninsula: 4 Miles

The gun itself is just another Glock - in other words, it's fine. .45 GAP ammo, probably not. Ammoseek.com (a sort of search engine for ammo) doesn't even show it in the drop-down list. And I don't believe it can be used with .45 ACP (even if you changed the barrel, .45 ACP magazines won't go in the grip), so you'll (most likely) wind up with an orphaned gun with nothing to shoot in it.This message has been edited. No hate here, confirmed Glock lover. But I don't understand the above. Why replace a world-class carry gun with a discontinued carry gun?

Been a while since I’ve seen any .45GAP ammo for sale. I wouldn’t consider buying a pistol that uses discontinued ammo. But that’s just my opinion.

I might buy one for no good reason (and almost did), but no way I'd pay very much for one. _____________________________________________________ Sliced bread, the greatest thing since the 1911.

When I think of the .45 GAP I think of a missed opportunity in the firearms world. Glock’s .45 GAP pistol is built of the same frames for the 9mm/.40S&W/.357Sig models. When you do side by side comparisons you see that the slides of the .45 GAP pistols are slightly thicker than the others. In my opinion, this is where Glock missed the mark. What Glock should have done was use the .45 GAP slide for the .40S&W cartridge. The additional mass of the slide would have mitigated many of the problems that arose on the .40cal pistols. It would have also put the perceived recoil of the Glock 22 very close to the Glock 17. The .45 GAP would have really shined in the 2011 platform that is now the rage. You could have gotten a thinner grip with the shorter cartridge. But the cartridge fell by the wayside before that platform became popular.

Isn't that what they did with the Gen 5 22 and 23 ?

Unless you reload for it, to me, it is a solution looking for a problem. Ammo is expensive, compared to 45 acp and cannot be found easily in most stores. From what I have researched/found online, a case of fmj ammo will run you around $600 and JHP ammo is even more. I have never fired one but I would wonder about how stout the recoil would be from a small gun like that and the ability of follow up shots. I had a Glock 36 and it was a handful. Although not a carry gun in size comparatively, the Glock 21 Short (Slim) Frame would be a better choice if I were looking to get a Glock in .45 caliber. 9mm JHP ammo has come a long way and I don't feel the least bit under-gunned so to speak.

There are a lot of used Glocks in 9mm, .45 ACP, and .40 S&W, serviceable police trade-ins usually, with finish wear from carrying in a holster. Otherwise, they're fine. The night sights are probably dead or near gone if so equipped. Check out AIM Surplus, perhaps? I've not seen .45 GAP ammo on shelves in about a year. Then, it was Federal American Eagle FMJ they were trying to get rid of.
