Buddy picked up a new G17L

First time at range no issues, around 300 rounds fired he says

Took it out again and the slide hangs up on a round every 3-4 shots.

Sometimes a tap on the back will get it to seat properly, most of the time the magazine has to be dropped.

Tried different ammo, different magazines, problem persists

I had him remove his red dot, problem persists (read some folks had red dot screw protruding into extractor spring)

All I can think is recoil spring? Anyone experienced this?

The problem can be replicated hand cycling thru a magazine, doesn't have to be live fire. Seems like we've eliminated every possibility except the barrel itself and recoil spring

^^^I would say the same. Also, because the G17L Gen5 slide has that removable polymer piece, make sure that it’s seated properly.

I haven’t heard any reliability complaints about the G17L Gen5 overall.

My honest question is between the perfect run range day and the jamming range day what did he do? In almost every one of these cases, I will get the owner to finally admit they dropped in a non oem part like a trigger, connector or something else. Sometimes the littlest thing that might seem inconsequential ( back plate mag extension different mag release etc) introduces a gremlin.
Make sure the gun is returned to @00% stock configuration and run again. A glock ( or any gun really ) should not have to be spotless or soaked in lube to run

If the screw mounting the optic to the right side of the slide was in fact too long and entered the EDP channel, damage to the EDP spring and/or rod could have occurred. I would remove the EDP assembly and inspect the spring and rod. If the spring is bent or stretched it needs to be replaced. Also look for chatter marks in the EDP rod which would be indicative of a screw impinging on it.
This type of damage will cause issues with extraction and ejection.

Thanks for the comments. I agree anything aftermarket is usually to blame, but I don't think he's added anything other than the red dot.

I'll see the problem for myself next week - MacGyver i'm not familiar with the polymer piece you referenced, i've never used a 17L before.

The G17L and G34 have always used the same recoil spring as the regular G17. As such, there is always material missing on the longer slides to reduce weight. The Gen5 G17L does this a little differently than the old G17L, probably to expedite manufacturing.

I find it hard to imagine that that would be the issue, but who knows? If the force required to seat it is stronger than the recoil spring, you could theoretically assemble the pistol with that piece not fully in place, maybe causing function issues.

I agree with sw4566 about the optics screws. The new Gen6 has a far superior setup to the Gen5, and has no way of interfering with the extractor.

that was my first thought. Along with some snappy quality ammo.

Maybe he put it back together wrong. Lube it, especially around the barrel hood and Run some hot ammo through after verifying it’s correct.

This is most likely the issue. Dissemble, look for bent/damaged extractor parts/springs.
