Alternative to Ruger LC9s Pro? Login/Join

I am giving serious thought to purchasing a Ruger LC9s Pro. Before doing so, are there other models I should consider that are comparable (or better) to the Ruger LC9s Pro?

I would use the Ruger as either a backup, or as primary carry when size is a major consideration.

S&W Shield is comparable. It can be found without a thumb safety, like the Pro version of the LC9s. Hard to say which is "better" objectively.

I can't think of many 7+1s with as slim a profile as the lc9s. The trigger can't be beat imo.

Edit: Walther PPS M2 might also be a contender.

The LC9's Pro is my daily carry. The trigger is great, accuracy and reliability have been 100% even with my reloads. I added a set of night sights and have never looked back to the Glock 26 and Sig 938 it replaced.

I carried one for over two years and it is with the right holster a joy to carry... you will not notice it after a while. The trigger is great and mine was very accurate. little pistol does have some 'snap' when shooting... not something I ever 'enjoyed' shooting at the range but always functioned as it was designed.

Here are the items i did not like. First, I did not like the grip.. too small.. I fixed this with one of those Hogue slip on rubber grips and liked it a lot... second: RUST!... I finally got this under control on the slide with WD40 soaked into the IWB leather holster I used.... but the mags also tend to rust... maybe it's just me an old fat white guy in the south in the summer.... now for the last part that caused me to stop carrying the LC9s pro... (this is very subjective)... all my other pistols are double/single action with no safety ... I decided the LC9's trigger was just too light on the off chance I actually needed to use it... also potentially dangerous for everyday carry.... considering all the things you hear about Glocks going off (on their own) Since I've made a conscience decision to switch from Rugers to Sigs I started looking at the Sig choices and decided to go with a Sig P290 which is double action only...that is what I'm carrying now... but to be honest I have some issues with it too... So far the one issue I don't have is the Rust thing since both the slide and mags are stainless....

I had one for a short time. They're easy to carry and the trigger feels nice but it was for me it was too light for a carry gun. Mine wasn't very accurate, I just couldn't get a decent group out of it. Part of the that may of been the very snappy recoil. It's a shame, I really liked how easy to conceal it was but I just didn't like shooting it. If you haven't already, take a look at the Shield, Springfield XDS, Beretta Nano and Walther PPS. They're not as light as the LC9 but the XDS and PPS shoot like a full size pistol. The Nano conceals as well or better then the LC9 and of course the Shield may be the best all around choice.

I had one (Pro). Loved the trigger and the cost/quality of magazines (vs my Kahr Cm9 & CW9). Sadly, it was just too damn thin for me. I don't have massive hands but I ended up adding a Hogue wrap on the grip. After owning/shooting it a bit, I ended up selling it.

Incredibly thin (which might be a benefit to some) and excellent trigger.

I have the old model LC9.

I carry it every day. GREAT pistol. Mine has the old DAO trigger which I like, and I ignore both the safety and the mag disconnect.

I've thought about getting the newer model but I can't part with the old one. Have killed grouse with it so I know it's accurate and I barely notice it is with me. Every day, all day.

The only other gun I'd even think of getting would be a Glock 43 but I think the Ruger is even flatter.

Who cares what the thing feels like if it gets left home because it's too big or bulky to carry every day?

Having said that, I like the feel of the gun or better put, have come to like it. Yeah, it's small. Yeah, it's flat. Yeah, it's a great gun.

And it has 9 shot mags available so one of those is in my pocket.

I have had an LC9s for way over a year and like it very much. The safety is small, and a big plus for me to feel more comfortable carrying it chamber-loaded. Noticeably slimmer grip than the G43 as others have noted. One consideration though, some folks are concerned about how Ruger has both the sear and firing pin safety (called striker blocker, I think, by Ruger) are engaged by the striker foot. On the Glocks, as I'm sure you know, the FP safety/striker block is separately activated and located between the sear and the breech face. I'm not an engineer so I'm not a worry-wart about this - but it's something to think about since both the LC9s and Pro may not be as drop safe as previously thought.

Is the holster you illustrated comfortable?

Would like to know the maker.

It is very comfortable. The one i use most and easy to reholster. A good belt keeps it in place.

I want to echo everything that 3/4 flap says about the original LC9, except shooting a grouse with it Smile

It is a great pistol.
Supremely reliable, it goes bang every time I pull the trigger. It is one of the slimmest, lightest, most concealable pistols that I own. I can hit the vitals on a man sized target with it, easily, at self defense distances. I can't ask much more from a gun that I carry every day.
I also pay no attention to the safety and the magazine disconnect. Once I got used to the DAO trigger, I didn't mind it at all.

3/4 flap, I wasn't doubting your shooting a grouse with it. I was just stating that I haven't had the opportunity to do so.

Thanks for posting the photos. I enjoy the stories and photos that you post on here, especially of your gear and your forays into the outdoors.

I was also agreeing with you about the accuracy of this little handgun.

Five shots at about 8 or 9 yards.

Oh, no problem. I didn't think you were doubting. I appreciate the comments!

And that is great shooting by the way!!

I had a LC9s Pro. Traided for the Honor Guard. A little heavier, but a lot nicer to shoot.

I once had two. Good looking guns. Easy to carry. Hard on the hand when shooting and not very accurate. I sold them. Now I carry either a P938 or a Kimber micro 9. I am happy I did.

At the risk of repeating myself, I'll say again I was amazed at how accurate the little pistol was. And it preformed flawlessly... I also commented I did not like shooting it.. way too much snap to be fun... but then I did not carry it for fun and when I go to the range to have fun I shoot a 'normal' sized pistol. I could not imagine putting a hundred rounds through one of these, unless you are just into pain and torture.... You, or at least I, don't carry a gun everyday because it is fun to shoot.
