neil0311P320 M17 slide slipped off while cleaning
Was done cleaning my M17 and hands were a little slick. Was putting the slide back on the grip, and about to close the takedown lever and the slide shot off like a rubber band onto the granite counter.
It only went about a foot or so, but put a small ding in the counter and there is a corresponding ding on the finish of the slide.
Anything to worry about as far as damage? Doesn’t look like the barrel crown was hit or anything else was hit, but the spring tension sent it flying, so just curious if I need to do anything.
Could sights be affected?

sns3guppyIt's unlikely anything was hurt, but slap it together, go shoot, and see. If the sights don't look bent and aren't loose, then you're probably fine. It's very unlikely point of aim was shifted.

Thanks. That was my main concern is that the zero on the sights could be changed. Other than a very small scuff on the corner edge where it hit the counter, there’s no other visible issue. It was just under pressure from the recoil spring and kind of scared me when it went flying.

Nick BDon’t let your wife see the ding in the countertop and you and the gun will be fine .

cslingerGun will function just fine when your wife uses it to kneecap you as a warning not to screw with her countertops.

You’re a wise man.

LincolnSixEchoBased on the images of many of the surplus/issued M17’s, it appears that they can survive much worse than a ding here and there and still be GTG. Still sucks and my OCD would kick in, but sometimes when a gun gets its first scratch or ding, I actually enjoy it more afterwards as I’m no longer as particular about keeping it pristine like all the others in the safe.

neil0311I just called Sig Sauer customer service because I’m an OCD worrier, and the guy laughed when I described what happened.
He said “as long as a tank didn’t run over it, you should be fine. And even then it may be OK.”

Sgt 127I recall we talked about the Glock slide in FBI armorer school. (Long time ago, the Glock was pretty new).
The Achilles Tendon of a disassembled Glock is the front of the slide. Where the recoil spring come out.
If dropped, straight down right on that little flange, it had a possibility of cracking.
The 320 slide looks considerably stronger. I wouldn’t give it another thought.
