I picked it up Tuesday and have some observations.

The good:
The high gloss black DLC is beautiful and would look amazing in a Colt Python its also very slick. If feels like the gun is heavily oiled even though it was not.

The slide to frame fit was impeccable, sort of like a high end 1911.

The slide moves on the frame like its on ball bearings. If you have ever racked a Volkmann or BEC 1911, you will understand.

The Gridlok grips are fantastic, sticky but not overly aggressive. It actually feels like the grips are grabbing your hand. Its pretty cool but they are slightly thicker than the ones on the Classic or the STAS.

The newer upswept slide release works much better than the previous models. Its a significant improvement.

It comes with a suppressor heigh front sight for full co-witness with an optic.

For me, at least, it was not any more accurate than the 226 x-five legion, both of them are easy to shoot 1.5" at 25 yards off a rest and are not finicky about bullet profile. Even feeding the Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman which chokes most semi autos I have tried

The bad:
The grips screws are loctited in place and immoveable. I wanted to remove a panel so I could swap the mag release to the right side but could not budge the screws. My local gunsmitb tried as well and said he was afraid of breaking the screws off in the frame or damaging the panels.

The slide release still needs improvement, its just too small to access easily.

While the DLC is pretty nice, I am not sure it justifies the $500 price increase.

Just heat up the grips screws and the loctite should loosen up. Heat gun, or even a hair dryer.

I was under the impression that the new style of magazine release can be switched over to the other side without removing the grip panels.

The grip panel blocks access to the hole in the mag release button that you put a thin punch in to release the plastic retainer.

Interesting. Is that only a problem with the grips on the Reserve?

Sweet. That polished black DLC is going to take over the "nice gun" finish from a good blue job if they're not careful.

I do believe those are lok brass grips on there as well. If so, that is also probably a couple hundred bucks of your price increase over a standard x-five.


I guess they're aluminum. Brass only for 320. Still $125.

The price increase, as stated by the OP, and I agree, is the high polish DLC finish. It is the most beautiful black finish.

I want to have a couple of my revolvers done in this Glossy DLC. It really is beautiful

Put it into an oven set to warm. Once it hits 150 F those screws will come loose. BTW most consumer products are designed to withstand 150 F because that is how hot a car parked in the sun on a hot August day can get.

About the only exception to this is Mobile Phones and when they can figure out a display screen that isn't harmed by these temps it will happen. The lesson here is don't leave your phone in a car with the windows closed on a hot sunny day.

That is a sharp looking pistol. It has a lot of neat things on it/in it-blueing, the comp,the grips,etc.. Congrats.

After a couple range sessions I have a some observations.
1- It shoots very flat and is very accurate. I was able to get consistant hits all the way out to 100 yards today. I am sure the weight is part of it as it soaks up recoil.
2- It will eat anything I feed it without fuss.
3- The DLC is super easy to clean, just a cloth wipes off.powder residue, this finish is really something.
4- The DLC feels slippery, its kind of weird, I never lost my grip the gun fits my hand too.well but I kept expecting too because of how the finish felt.
5- I do not think I will continue using the gridlok, I prefer the grips on the STAS over these.

I have an X-FIVE STAS. I am not sold on the "slide comp" on the X-FIVE Legion and this new Reserve. Does it do much?

Added: I installed the flat trigger from the newer X-FIVES in my STAS, I like it.
