To answer Lt Cheg’s original question: My personal carry as an “on duty” Sheriff would be an Sig P220. I’d probably fancy up the holster a belt a bit, but that’s just the “Texas” in me.

I am in the solidarity camp, when in uniform, I would carry whatever was issued or authorized for purchase by the rank and file.
In plainclothes, I would carry a good off duty gun, in my case a S&W Plastic M&P.
Do you have barbecues with appearances by public officials in New York? If so, I want a BBQ Gun, which would be my old Commander with some fancier stocks and a leather holster.

I definitely plan on letting the troops carry from an approved list provided they meet certain requirements. For that reason I don’t feel like I would be a hypocrite for not carrying the standard issue pistol. I feel like I would be following the same rules I asked the rank and file to follow.
On an unrelated note, I’m making some progress. This day dream/ exercise may not be as much of a fantasy as it was when I first started this thread. Wish me luck!

If I was sheriff I'd carry a Legion P226 in 357 sig... the men and women under me would not be quite so lucky... I'd make them carry standard Sig P226s but also in 357 Sig....

Thank you. I’ll do a separate post with more detailed updates but the long and short of it is that I submitted the requisite amount of signatures (along with a healthy cushion) to be in the primary election. The window for general objections to my petitions closed yesterday so it looks like I am definitely going to be in the Republican primary. I’ve gone from a field of 11 to a field of 3 now (myself and another Republican in the primary, along with a Democrat). I’m extremely proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish and I’m very grateful for all of the support I’ve received. All of the donations that I’ve received thus far have paid for my website and promotional materials and handouts, which have helped me tremendously in getting the word out about my campaign. I’m a real contender now! Thanks and be on the lookout for a more detailed post on my experience in the Lounge.

My choice would be an Sig P226 Tac Ops with 2 spare 20 round mags. I would cut the slide for a Holosun 507K, mount the Hogue Magwell grips, and add the Legion decocker and slide stop/release.

I'd go with a USP45. Preferably the Stainless version.
I'm a couple counties south of you. As a veteran street cop, I'd say going to each roll call (even midnights) and introducing yourself would be an easier task then meeting every individual. A short bio and open the floor for questions and advise that you're very open to suggestions regarding the day to day operations. You'll get way more information than just dealing with the admin.
The CLEO of my agency has been in his acting position for a year and I still couldn't pick him out of a line up. He hides in his office and refuses to interact with anyone other than a scumbag Capt.
I'd also think it'd be helpful to join one of the local NY firearms forums and drum up support there.

Thanks for the input, it actually prompted me to sign up for a couple NY based gun forums. And thanks for the rest of the input aS well. I definitely plan on going to enough lineups on every shift to ensure that I’ve seen everyone in their home lineup. As much as I hated working midnights I even plan on working the road a bit on each shift if elected. I’m very serious about wanting to see what the deputies need and also in setting a good example if elected. While I realize that being Sheriff iS much more about setting policy and vision I am a strong believer in leading from the front.

I’m a 1911 enthusiast. Carried a Commander sized S&W for a long time. A few years ago picked up a CZ PCR in 9mm. It has become my favorite.
I’m convinced that it is an excellent pistol. It would be my choice.
