You might take a look at the Sig E2 style grips, they are pretty thin.

The Sig E2 style grips feel significantly thinner. I wish they had a model to match the color/style of my P229 Legion.

The problem with the E2s for me is that they are not only thin side to side, but reduce the backstrap and also have a different "hump". They alter the natural index of the gun for me and reduce the trigger reach to where it starts to become uncomfortable to pull it through the break. Good for folks with short fingers, not so great for those of us with spider hands. They may work well for your wife depending upon her hand size, especially if she hasn't already spent a lot of time developing an index with the platform.

The P228/P229 is a bit of a chunky monkey and it would definitely be nice of somebody would come out with a grip that retains the same front to back dimensions and profile, but thinner on the sides. I tried the Hogues G10s and while they're extremely nice and well made, they felt fatter than the factory plastics so I had to return them.

I'll step in here;

Measuring a stock plastic P229 grip thickness is .155 measuring below the P229 pad.

Both G10 and Aluminum call out .175" at the same area on the print. This grip, Chainlink measures .172"

Real Point of interest is the backstrap. Stock plastic P229 grip (on the bottom)verses G10 grip (on the Top)is quite a difference

So, to confirm Hogue G10 and or Aluminum P229 grips are 0.015-.02" thicker than Stock Plastic BUT trigger reach is shorter giving the perceived feel smaller

Ken thanks. What about the “hogue extreme grips”. Same thickness ? They are marketed as thinnest available.

Side story. I used to live in CA and met Guy Hogue and some of his crew at a gun show in San Jose in the early 90’s when they were still personally attending and selling their wares. Been a fan since with most all my aftermarket grips being Hogues.

I can't add any definitive grip measurements or dimensions to this thread, just my impresssions. I have owned three P228s and one P229 (9mm), all moved on now as I age out and down size. But I do have good recollection and muscle memory of how those grips felt in my hand.

That is why I was so surprised when I picked up a used M11 A1 in LGS the other day. It had E2 grips installed, and felt so different and better than what I expected it to. Definitely smaller IMO. So I bought it.

When I bought my P229r Elite, it came with factory grips. Although they felt okay, they didn't have that just right fit for me. I installed a set of the Hogue rubber grips, and while those felt better and provided much better grip, they felt a bit pudgy. I finally decided to give the E2 grip a try, and like the three bears, it was just right. Smaller allowing me to get a full grip on the firearm. Great texture, so no slipping and sliding. They just hit the mark for me. Good thing too, if they hadn't worked, the Hogue G10's were next on the "give it a try" list. In fact, I may still give those a try as I really like the looks of the Black Checkered grips, and they make access to the trigger mechanism much easier.

The best defense is a good offense, and I'm really offensive. Wink

Other than the E2s being ugly, a bit loose on my 228, I liked them. Definitely prefer the Hogue G10s though. I also have a P225A1, and it feels perfect!

There was a factory grip for the 228/229 that was thin as the regular grip, but with a straighter backstrap. Can't recall if the factory called them thin, or slim or what. I'd show how they compare to the regular factory grips, but I don't have a photo hosting service..
