Would anyone turn down a good shape 1076 with only 1 mag for $1000 or would I be stupid to pass on it.
P.S. will 4506 mags work in it. Got plenty of thoseThis message has been edited. Last edited by: ThankGod4Sig,

That’s the FBI model if memory serves correctly. There aren’t many on the market. I see one on armslist for just under 1200. If it’s worth it to you I’d say jump. I stumbled into an estate sale and bought a bunch of awesome deals, one being a 1006 for $400 in excellent condition. If I had the money and wanted a 1076 I’d probably jump at $1000with no regrets. Not sure about the mags. I’ve purchased several mags online.
I would pass. Glocks or 1911 do everything better for 10mm.

Magazines can go for $100 or more these days. To my knowledge, the 4506 magazine will not work. Until somewhat recently, all the individual parts were available to assemble a magazine but Numrich finally sold out of the tubes.

If you are a 3rd Gen S&W fan, then go for it. That generation of autos were built like tanks.
All else fails you can pistol whip with it...

not all 1076's were FBI, I sold one not to long ago for $1500 that was factory lettered to Chesterfield VA PD, (they used them breifly) and was documented as being sent back for a recall (the repair is also noted by 3 dots on the frame at the decocker)
no idea on the mag, however I would doubt a 45cal mag would fit in a 10mm smith and work
As stated the 1076 was sold commercially and to Law Enforcement. Not all LE 1076s were FBI guns. Only a small percentage went to the Bureau. Just under 14,000 pistols were manufactured in the three years of production. The FBI received 2,400 of those before the original 9,500 pistol contract was canceled
The 1076 with it's decocking lever was designed to comply with the FBIs RFP.
The 645/745/845/45xx family of magazines will not work
There are lots of 10xx magazines out there, but like many discontinued products sellers ask a big price.
I have acquired several dozen mags for less than $40 just by keeping my eyes open at gunshop parts boxes and such. Unfortunately the Internet has been making that harder and harder to find when walking into brick and mortar stores.
So just bite the bullet and buy a few at market price but keep your eyes open for deals
What does "10X incorrect" mean? Edited to add: I just re-read the thread and now I see that photohause was using shorthand to say that 10X-Shooter's post was incorrect :end edit
If you are saying that Chuck's article is incorrect on various facts and full of dated information I agree
Most of the FTUs findings were published in various 1989 issues of the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin. I may still have my copies, but I have not looked at them in many yearsThis message has been edited. Last edited by: colt_saa,
Well I bought it. I’d love for it to be a true FBI gun but I’m happy if it’s not one.
I think you can request for S&W to pull records on it. Just not sure how to do that.
I guess I’ll be looking for another mag for it somewhere.
I’ll post pics when I get it this week.
Yes I’m a 3rd gen S&W guy. My 1st gun was a 4566 that I have today.

Nice to hear you bought it. It sounded like a good buy, they aren't going down in price in the future so I think you'll be fine should you decided to get rid of it.

Congratulations on the "New to You" pistol
Factory letters are now provided through the S&W Historical Foundation
Nice, I bought one a few months ago myself. I found an extra magazine at a pawn shot for $39.99. I couldn't believe mags were going for $150 each on auction sites.
I found some S&B ammo for $25.99 that works well. If you have a Rural King they stock several loads of 10mm.

As has been pointed out, not all 1076 pistols were "FBI guns". The Bureau pistols, one of which I was issued as a Special Agent in the 90s, were essentially worked over by the S&W custom shop before issue. I will tell you that, while it was close in size and weight to a boat anchor, it was an absolute joy to shoot and a tack-driver.

They are good pistols. Heavy and heavily built.
I think that is a reasonable price for one in good condition, but I am not an expert on prices for these. Check Gun Broker.
You may not want such a chunky, heavy gun. Great for shooting, not so great for carrying.

I once owned the .45 ACP sibling of the 10mm 1076, the S&W "4576," with "45" denoting the caliber and "76" denoting a frame mounted decocker (the FBI's 10mm 1076 also used a frame (NOT slide/1006) mounted decocker). My thinking at the time was that I was getting the benefits of a frame mounted "decocker" in an all stainless-steel pistol. While it was a fantastic pistol and shot like a dream, still preferring my SIG P220, I nonetheless traded it away.
