Oh - I didn't miss out on Freedom Week, just ask my UPS driver. Great legs. I have a 2015 229 chambered in .40 S&W. over 4000 rounds with 5 jammed, all reloads at the range. Never had a jam with new ammo. My issue with the long extractor is the need for a 3mm half round to take it off and then clear the way for removal of firing pin (for cleaning/inspection after 10 yrs). While I would trust my live with that gun, I would much rather have my 226 ZEV.. wow what a factory trigger! | |||

I have had several P226's with the long extractor and never had a hint of a problem. I just purchased a used P229 "nitron rail" with the long extractor, and was getting about 1 failure to extract (followed by a double feed) every 50 rounds. I did some googling and found a report of issues with Winchester White Box, which I always use since I get it so cheap. So I went out and purchased about 600 rounds of various full metal jacket ammo (Federal, Blazer Brass and Aguila) and after two range sessions I did not have a single problem. I then loaded up some Winchester White Box and had a failure to extract in the first magazine, so hopefully that was the problem. I really like the P229, its my favorite so far, I think I will have to start putting defensive rounds though it and see what happens, any more failures to extract and I may give up on the P229. | |||

I'm clear on the Necro thread, but since this was started I've acquired two long-extractor Sigs, a P226 and a P229. Both have been good to go, and while it's not because of the extractor specifically, I do prefer the newer style long-extractor slide on the P229 with the full-height serrations as it provides more grip surface for slide manipulation. | |||

If the long external extractor was a problem, the internet would be littered with photos of broken parts. That just simply doesn’t exist. | |||

And if it does break then replace it with a new one and drive on . The striker broke on my G17 Gen 4 at just over 8k rounds . I put a new one in and it’s back to going strong for the last 5k+ rounds . | |||

I don’t like the long extractor aesthetically, but I have never had any functional problems with it. That said, I can only imagine cost savings as being the reason that SIG switched to it. I’ve never heard of any reliability problems with the old short extractor before. | |||
