I have a Marine who is about to retire and I was going to give him a P365xl as a retirement gift. However he recently told me he may be moving to CA after he retires. I have no idea how that communist state determines what is or is not legal, so can anyone weigh in on if the P365xl is "on the roster" (as I have heard before) or what modifications I would need to make to it to get it compliant before he moves there? I had already bought a standard P365xl for him.

Last I heard, new CA residents are not prohibited from bringing "off roster" handguns with them, but must complete an on-line registration form available from CA Dept of Justice. No modifications are necessary to the make the firearms compliant with the roster either and multiple handguns (firearms) can be registered at one time, so the total cost is $19.00. You complete the form yourself with however many handguns you wish to register, send it in with a check, and wait for the confirmation letter from DOJ. The handguns are NOT taken to an FFL for this process. Just keep them in your home. Firearms that meet CA's description of an "Assault Weapon", are prohibited though and so are detachable magazines that are capable of holding more than ten rounds. See below: https://crpa.org/news/crpa/doj...ip-reporting-system/ https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/bof-4542a.pdf "I'm not fluent in the language of violence, but I know enough to get around in places where it's spoken."

Yup, that is still the current procedure. 1. He has to be the legal owner before moving into the state. 2. The pistol need not be on the current Roster. 3. He cannot legally bring in magazine with a capacity larger than 10 rounds 4. It may not be fitted with a threaded barrel. No need to involve an FFL. The $19 registration fee is all that is required. Keep the confirmation letter, "just in case" No, Daoism isn't a religion

Tell him to bring a bunch of off-roster guns to flip for profit haha. Ya just register it here, no mags over 10rds, and no threaded barrel. https://oag.ca.gov/firearms/certified-handguns/search ...Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just a freight train coming your way...

You might as well get a regular P365 since you aren’t going to be able to use the extra rounds in the XL.

It's only in the past year that the accursed roster has been cracked open enough to allow us to buy P320 and P365. Now that's expanded to get one upgraded model of each. Of course the FCU is the registered part, so you can do whatever you want with grip modules, slides, etc. once you have the basic gun. _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"
