So there I was, a few months ago, standing in my LGS. I'd dropped by to visit my friend who owns the building and we went down to the LGS that occupies one of the places on the first floor. There it was, a nice looking Smith SD9VE. I passed right by, only noting in passing the very, very low price. I thought of this as the descendant of that gun I really never liked, the S&W Sigma, which had been branded by some as the Smegma. I'd certainly never owned one, though I'd shot several in teaching the CCL classes here in Florida for many years. And, though I never disparaged these guns to their owners, I knew in my heart I'd never own one. Alas, that day, there was just nothing in the cases that spoke to me and I was getting ready to leave. My attention was drawn back to that SD and, for some reason I asked the owner to let me see it. Satanic influence? It had 3 16 round mags, a stainless slide and the price he quoted me for that like-new gun made me say I'd take it. When I got home, I ordered night sights (I always do that for some reason) and after they arrived, I took it to the range. I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe blown away is better. The trigger, which was stock, was quite good and the darned thing shot very, very well. I actually liked it! Yeah, it was big, and heavy, but I'd bought it for a house or vehicle gun. Though I always garage our vehicles, I never leave a firearm in them, so it became the Home Defender of Last Resort. Or something like that. I even bought a purty, police blue Kydex IWB holster for it. I think they make a kinda attractive couple. I added a Snagmag I'd had for a G19 size gun and now I could-but haven't-carry the Smith if I chose to. I really like this gun and I have confidence in its reliability and would, if I absolutely had to, be willing to carry this as an EDC, though I much prefer a lighter firearm. Anyway, that's my confession. I bought a gun I never thought I'd own and certainly never thought I'd like. BobThis message has been edited. Last edited by: straightshooter1,

Can you pull the trigger with just one finger? __________________ "Owning a handgun doesn't make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician." -Jeff Cooper

Does it have to be loaded to do that?

Do yourself a favor and get the Apex Tactical spring kit ($25) or trigger kit ($65). It absolutely changes the gun into a viable, economical HD/SD pistol. It’s not a bad pistol, per se. It’s just the shitty trigger turns it into a POS. If I ever ran across one for the right price, I’d snag one and Apex it.

So far the trigger seems fine, at least to me. I read that the triggers stink and was surprised mine didn't. But I ain't looking no gift horse in the mouth. Bob

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should |
Maybe check to see if it already has the upgraded trigger. ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

I thought I might do that this weekend. The trigger is not light, but it is smooth and not uncomfortably heavy. I have a trigger pull gauge around the garage uhhhhh, somewhere and I will try to find it, too. Bob

I was also surprised at how well the trigger pull was on the SD9VE pistols, much better than the original Sigma. It was another shot for the Sigma line but died quick.

I looked, but did not take anything out of the frame, other than removing the slide, etc. I have never disassembled one of these and, since I use it as a home protection gun, I didn't want to, uhhhh, take the darned thing to the gunsmith on Tuesday in pieces in a bag. I'd guess it's all original. Haven't found my Trigger pull gauge yet. Bob

I've always thought the trigger on the SD9VE was a major improvement over the one on the Stigma. The polymer and general build materials OTOH...maybe not so much. But from my own time with one the SD9VE shoots decent enough for its price point. It makes a strong enough case to buy a S&W instead of a settling on a Taurus. -MG

That rug really tied the room together. |
Sure, if you want a unreliable piece of shit, "upgrade" the trigger with an APEX kit. I have installed two Apex kits. One in a j frame, and one in a SD9VE, and both APEX kits gave me light primer strikes. Not something you would want on a self defense gun. APEX trigger components were removed and thrown in the trash where they belong. The SD9VE trigger is pretty nice actually. Mine, stock, after 1000 rounds or so, is about 8 pounds. These guns are very reliable in stock form as they are sorta Glock 19 clones. ______________________________________________________ Often times a very small man can cast a very large shadow

I used to own one. Agree, great ergonomics, very accurate, and just shoots and shoots. I put 7k rounds through mine and traded it for a measly $175 when I should've kept it for that. It's been a LONG time since I owned that gun, but there was a spring in it that you either removed for the trigger or reversed and it lightened the factory trigger pull considerably. Someone might have done that with yours so i'd check, if the trigger isn't around 9lbs. This was the mod https://www.bing.com/videos/ri...EA031FCEE4D8D1FF66C3

I never got around to acquiring one, but this gun's predecessor, the SD9 (no suffix, also available in .40-caliber), which included a front night sight, seemed like a bargain.

Mine has an APEX trigger. One of my favorite pistols to shoot. NRA Life Member
