Some backstory first.
I inherited a Colt Cobra and Colt Python from a relative that passed away 14 years ago. He was a collector and both are unfired and sitting in my safe. Throughout the years, I've wanted to shoot both of them but haven't as they're just beautiful pistols to look at and both have long term storage CLP allied to them every few years.

I have searched but not very hard for years looking for shooter grade Colts so I can see what I'm missing. The gun Gods smiled on me this week and I found this Cobra. It hasn't been shot a lot but still has some wear on it. Not much but enough that I will shoot this one.

Oddly enough, serial # on the shooter is older than my collector. "A" range serial number puts it at 1970 production. Both collector Colts are 1978 production.

I bought a Cobra about 8 months ago, needed a little work. 1st off, the cylinder was very stiff to swing out, almost frozen. My lube job made it better, but not great.

One of the side-plate screws was frozen in position. Since it was discounted, I let a qualified gunsmith give it the once over. It now functions perfectly.

I got my '61 Python back in '80 for less than $200. She's never let me down.



She will always be nothing but a shooter.

'68 python i bought new for $150. 300rds fired.

Very nice Cobra looks excellent, no +P ammo alloy frame. Second series my favorite.

My dad & I were talking about his King Cobra the other day. He sold it to buy his P239 in 1996.
IIRC he bought it in the late 80s for $350, sold it in 96 for $400.

4" stainless, probably worth a decent amount now.

Loving those pictures of the Pythons. That's my next one to find hopefully.

I put a box of 50-125gr. JSP through it yesterday and it functioned 100%. Accuracy was decent close up and that's what it's made for IMO. I did move out to 20 yards on a steel man sized target and all rounds hit just not a tight group.

I would carry this pistol but it'll probably just be a range gun to have fun with.

OP if anything the Colt Cobra is best for carry and not used as a range gun due to the alloy frame that wont take a constant pounding. Also might want to consider getting a set of the original Colt stocks for that model and a grip adapter.
