Case in point, I have a 686 from the early 90’s, bought new. This gunsmith hasn’t been shot a whole lot. I decided to inspect it a few years back, clean but dry as a bone. One could argue about lube levels, but I’d think totally dry isn’t ideal.

It’s easy to go back a few decades older than that. Yes, watch the videos about the side-plate. I usually leave internals intact.

I may pull the side plate ( yes I know how to do it correctly) and check the lube. It has a really nice trigger pull. Thanks for the reminder on the lube.

I would absolutely LOVE a great -19 or -66!
It’s the guns I really learned how to shoot on. If I ever find one at a decent price, I’ll grab it.

As for THIS -19!!! Eek
Beautiful!

That’s way too much of a “safe queen” for me to get.

Thanks, I am casually looking at another one to use a shooter. A later model 19-5 with target stocks, hammer, and a target trigger.

That’s way too much of a “safe queen” for me to get.

I can't remember off hand which generation, maybe 5th Gen, but... off the top of my head, S&W had a run of -66s / -19's specifically for the State Department & Marine Security Guards. They were in black matte.
I believe the State Department actually did get issued a few of these guns. The State Department switched their weapons to Sig's (P-228) in the middle of this production I believe. Some of them are still floating around on the market. That's one that I'd snatch up!

The grips like you are describing (with no relief cut) were used in the early 50s. By the mid to late 50s a relief cut was added. I can't say for sure cause I didn't buy it new, but I thought that they were correct for that time period. I pulled them and looked for a serial number but could not read the info clearly. The experts on the SW forum think they are correct but no real way to know.

Those "football relief" target grips are correct for S&W's from approximately 1956 until approximately 1979. Target grips were generally not numbered to the gun unless they had to be fitted to a particular gun for some reason.

Beautiful Model 19. That one is a honey for sure!
I hope the box turns up.

There are certain threads that I keep coming back to for one reason or another, just to look again.
This is one.
I learned to shoot w/ a 19 the last year before the local PD switched to autos. I was lucky to get the (revolver) training.
That's a beautiful pistol.
