Any recommendations for safes for pistols? I want something fire proof and that will hold 20-30 pistols. I see lots for long rifles but not as much for pistols.

Most “rifle” safes can be configured with shelving converting them to an “anything” safe so to speak. Use some basic pistol racks or just lay the pistols on their sides and you will easily get 20+ in there.

One way I added more pistol 'storage' was to mount magnets on the shelf bottoms.

I bought a large one with no shelving and built my own. The safe came with bookshelf rails attached inside. All I had to do was cut shelving to size and buy little clips to hold them.

All the manufacturers make a short version of their gun safe.

However, like other comment, the cost is probably very similar to the smaller but tall gun safe. Those will give you flexibility of it storing a few long gun alongside your pistol.

I think several make an interior that is mostly shelves but has slots in the front for a few long gun.

For a more modest collection of pistols you can fit a good 6-8 or so in your basic Sentry floor fire safe. The ones big enough to have a shelf in them. This is a more or less inexpensive way to provide some security.

I know this isn't pertinent to the OP but since this thread will invariably come up as part of somebody else's search on the internet I figured I would throw this out there. I am huge proponent of having a way to secure your arms when necessary (Kids, parties, 3rd party folks in your home, your crazy friend etc.) so I just wanted this out there for folks looking for options.

NOTE-If you don't have that crazy friend......look in the mirror, you might be that crazy friend. Just saying.

Everyone has made valid points here. I'd like to add the following. Do yourself a favor and put the handguns in either gunsocks or borestores. For the few extra dollars, they will prevent scratches, nicks, dings, etc and you can pile them up on a safe shelf. Make little tags to attach to the outside and write what's inside on the tag for easy ID when looking for a certain gun you want to pull out.

Personally I'd stay away from miniature safes. If some @$$#0l3 decides to "pay a visit" when you're not home, he could easily take it with him and do his evil deeds elsewhere.

When I used safes, I found it to be a PITA to get to stuff that wasn't near the door and hated having to dig stuff from the back out. When we built the new house, we had a vault built beneath the garage. One side is my reloading equipment and equipment/ammo storage on the side walls. The other side I installed a Gallowtech storage system. I really like how it is easily configurable and I can get to what I want when I want.

Don't know if you have a place where that might be an option.

Cool idea. Where'd you get the magnets, and what's the purpose of the orange dots/tacks please?

I’m going to venture a guess that the orange thumbtacks are there for easily locating the magnets under the shelves.

Orange dots (thumbtacks) just made it easier to see exactly where the magnets were as I looked into the safe.

The ones on the ends keep me from pulling the shelf out if I pull back instead of down.



This safe isn't very big, but it is bolted to the slab foundation of the house.
Not even sure if I needed to do that after loading ammo into it.



I have a few smaller safes in the house, but every one of them is attached to studs in the walls.
Not impossible to steal, but it would take some time to either get it off the wall or pry the door open.

Keep an eye out for used safes and since it'll just be for handguns it doesn't have to be a tall, open, gun safe. I found one from a jewelry store that had closed down. In addition to a couple large shelves that I can stack pistols in their boxes it has 9 small drawers that each hold 2 full size handguns as well as other drawers and shelves.
