I have not yet begun to procrastinate |
I’ve been looking around for a scope for a Thompson Contender. My searches have come up really lame! Did manufacturers abandon the idea? I don’t want a red dot and I don’t want a variable that reduces the eye relief to 11”. That’s a little too close to a 35 Remington for my taste. Any help from the SigForum brain trust? -------- After the game, the King and the pawn go into the same box.

https://www.burrisoptics.com/riflescopes/handgun "Serious handgun hunters employ seriously impressive cartridges at equally impressive distances. The Burris Handgun scopes are designed to match the needs of handgun wielders, standing up to the recoil and providing the magnification needed for long distance shoots. " ____________________

I have several pistols with scopes. On my Savage Striker .22lr I have a regular rifle scope (6-24x56) mounted because there is no recoil threat when close to my eye. My Dan Wesson 445 SuperMag revolver has a 2x Nikon LER scope. The T/C Contender in .223 has a LER Burris 3-12 scope. At higher magnifications you have a VERY small eye box to work with. My T/C Contender in 30-30 has a LER 2-7 Bushnell Elite. I have seen shooters that have high power pistols shoot with regular rifle scopes. They perfect a way to aim then back off the rear scope glass while trying to hold the cross hairs on target while trying to keep sight of the shrinking cross hairs. Burris, Leopold, Bushnell, and Nikon were always the go to LER scope makers.

Leupold at least for now is out of the handgun scope business, having cited a lack of sales in the type. Nikon no longer makes optics for firearms of any sort after the general gun world basically killed their business after Nikon initially rescinded their lifetime warranty policy, only to backpedal on that shortly thereafter because of the backlash. But by that time it was too late and whoever wasn't already a Vortex fan, became one thanks to Nikon's serious misstep in penny-pinching judgment. Burris still makes them. Bushnell makes one and sells it under the Weaver brand. S&W took their Crimson Trace brand into the world of optics and I believe they make at least one handgun scope. Other than that, you'll be shopping brands like UTG and BSA at the very bottom end of the market space. -MG

So looking at current options, Burris has variables that on higher settings reduce eye relief to 10-11”…not ideal. Crimson Trace has 8”(?) of eye relief. Leupold doesn’t play this game anymore and Nikon is extinct for scopes. I really don’t want to spend money on a BSA. I guess I’m stuck to looking for garage sales or gun shows (yuck) to find an old scope. -------- After the game, the King and the pawn go into the same box.
