It might be impractical but it’s a piece I’ve wanted off and on for awhile. Anything I should know… besides how insanely expensive the msgs are?!? Eek There are a few on GB I’m eyeballing.

The 1006 is built like a tank.

I have owned this one since 1990.

While the firearm is sufficiently accurate, other firearms of the day did shoot better groups. Most notably the Colt Delta Gold Cups and their variations.

The 1006 happened to be one of the most comfortable 10MMs of the era. It fit the hand well and it absorbed recoil very well which made it the softest shooting 10MM out there

The FBI and other Federal Agencies adopted a somewhat shorter barreled version with a decocker called the 1076.

The FBI and several other agencies also acquired HK MP5/10 SMGs to go with them

I would not worry too much about magazines. As long as you have a few you should be set. The only part of the magazine that is at risk of needing replacement is the spring. Aftermarket companies like Wolf will have springs availble for years. We are talking about a pistol that has been around for almost 40 years. I have not yet heard of any epidemic string of magazine failures

I own MANY Firearms chambered for the 10MM auto cartridge but if I owned none and I was looking to buy a Classic pistol to represent 10MM, the 1006 or the 1076 would be my choice

I’ve owned several 3rd gen Smith pistols, the 1006 has always been on my wish list. Midway USA has historically been pretty good about keeping factory hammer, firing and recoil springs. I’ve also lucked out calling S&W they sometimes will send a spring for free. Please post pics if you get one and I hope you find a good one!

I passed on a 1066 a while back because it was $899. Wish I knew that would be considered a steal now.

The 3rd Gen S&W are my favorite guns ever. I really wish I had purchased more of them back in the 90’s. They are awesome looking feel great. I get compliments on them every time I go to the range with one. Grab them every chance you can. I think the M&Ps are good but not special like those 3rd Gen pistols. It shot a 1006 many times but never bought one. I guess I liked the .9mms to much.

Same for me, I bought a retired LE 439 in the early 90s for a store gun. It's had a major action/trigger job and shoots much better than me. I followed that up with a 4506 and a 1006, the 45 is very accurate, the 1006 produces great groups from a rest, nuclear loads open a tad off hand but that's me. They all shoot minute of beer can at reasonable ranges and they just run, clean or dirty.

I recommend the rubber grips, easier to hold on to the 1006, I put them on all three. I did have to replace the factory mag springs on the two that came with the gun (1006), they got a little slow. I got lucky and offered an ebay guy 200 bucks for 5 mags just before they got crazy. I suggest getting one with the adjustable combat rear sight, like the one in the link... Good luck they are great guns and plan to reload,,

Nice Gun

They are great however one thing to be aware of is that S&W no longer supports them.

So if you need parts down the road, you have to scour the internet in hopes of finding what you need.

^^ As much as I like 3rd Gen S&W, the 10mm line was discontinued a lot sooner than the 9mm/40 guns were so parts are slim pickings and I also wonder what the condition of a 30+ year old 10mm with full power loads would be past cosmetics.

Had one. It was the biggest clunkiest gun I ever owned other than a desert eagle 44. Sold it to a friend of mine that had always wanted one.

The Smith 10xx series are neat guns. However, they won’t hold up to a lot of shooting.

If you get any of the S & W 10xx series, I know a guy that actually knows how to fix them.
He also has parts.
That's the problem owning a 3rd generation 10mm pistol. Getting repair parts.
I sold my 1076, and gave my 1006 & 5906 to my brother.
He doesn't shoot them frequently enough for breaking them.
Me personally, I consider the SIG P220 10mm pistol to be better than the S & W guns.
The others are gone & sold, and the SIG P220 10mm still has a place in my safe.
I also have a stainless dual cylinder Ruger Blackhawk in 10/40.

Or for something else also in current production I'm quite a fan of the large frame Tanfoglio pistols and they're all available in 10mm

The 1006 I had showed serious "primer wipe" (AKA firing pin wipe) on spent cases and seemed to be unlocking the breech way too early. Punctured primers too. I sold it.

I've had a half dozen S&W 10MM pistols; 1006s,1026s,1076s. All were boringly reliable, robust pistols. Nothing ever cracked, deformed, broke, etc. I started loading the 10MM as soon as dies became available, also used the old NORMA loads, and more recently the Underwood and Buffalo Bore 10MM ammo...
