So some of the reports of failures with P320 "Gutted Slide" pistols seem to involve Compact models. I think JLJones mentioned that a while back. Since I have never read of failures with FS guns, I got to wondering if the slides in FS guns have enough mass {more than Compacts} in spite of the milled-away portions to be reliable with all types of ammo AND maybe even including the light bullet stuff.

I wonder if the FS guns actually have an advantage over the compacts. A theory.

How about a slide weight comparison?

I just weighed mine on a kitchen scale as follows:

Pistol: SIG P320 Full Size w/ Night Sights. Slide "heavily milled away"AKA "Gutted" type.

Slide w/o bbl and return spring = 334 grams
Slide + bbl = 451 grams
Slide + bbl + return spring = 485 grams

If any of you folks can weigh yours, I would sure appreciate it. Might be interesting to get an idea what the various slides weigh.

Thanks.

What do you mean by "gutted slide?"

We have an old timey spring food scale, they aren't that accurate. If I reloaded or dealt drugs I'd have a digital scale.

Arc.

The one with the milled out lightening grooves.

It's been gutted!

I think it would be interesting to see what a heavily milled out FS slide like mine weighs compared to unlightened Compact slides. Might help to explain why reliability of the FS guns doesn'r seem compromised by the milling? Just a theory.

I don't care what the make or model is, I am highly skeptical of any "lightening cuts" or any other nonsense milled into a pistol slide, particularly a defensive weapon.

I have a P320c, I've put a variety of range and defensive ammo through it so far without issue. What am I doing wrong?

I'm with you.

I'm trying to figure out what the problem is, too. it's been "reported" but I can't find much about it. Maybe JLJones can weigh in.

Does yours have the lightening cuts?

I'm confuzzled.

So is mine.

Factory slides are {from what I gather} heavily-lightened {"gutted"} like mine, moderately-lightened, and not-lightened.

Take it off, take a pic and let us see what you've got.

Did you take the blue pill, or the red pill?

Looking at the interior of the slide just looks like another semiauto slide to me, without another to compare it to, it doesn't look "gutted" or whatever.

It boils down to mass and recoil energy, whatever they've worked out for various models, OK.

What I start calling shenanigans on, is all the stupid aftermarket Glock slides, and people who you ship your slide to so they can slot it like a toast rack, or fuckall.

Don't you work in a gun shop? Yank some slides on dem gats, boyo.

Took SIG awhile to finish beta testing on the 9MM slides, it's weight, and internal cuts.

Results may vary.

None of that reads as "gutted" to me, that's just tuning the weight of a slide.

"Gutted" makes it sound like you've sent your slide to be modded by a place that is also a meth lab.

My god, doesn't anyone just shoot anymore? This feels like OCD or at the least navel gazing.

Thanks! That's the info.

Thanks for the pics, Rhino. Looks like a variety of internal cuts on these slides. Interesting.

Maybe some folks can post some weights of Compact/Carry's, too.

arcwelder, no I do not "work in a gun shop". I don't have access to a variety or number of these pistols. I own an insurance agency and a cattle, hay and timber operation, among other things. I'm also interested in the design and technical details of the guns I shoot.

Oh I'm confusing you with someone else. Whose handle I currently forget.

Could you be more specific about failures in the compact models? Links?

I've dumped a variety of ammo through mine, my carry ammo is Cor-bon in the light and fast vein.

I can't and don't.

JLJones mentioned it on a thread here and I've read a couple other vague suggestions that the heavily-lightened Compact slides have been hit and miss. For all I know the bulk of it could be nonsense, but it got me curious about the weights of the slides as that was the supposedly critical issue. Regardless, I thought it would be interesting to see what slides actually weight whether there are problems or not.

Besides, my wife just got a nifty digital kitchen scale and I decided to give it a whirl.

Compare RHINOWSO's slide to my 9mm FS factory slide, which is an early model. In another thread, it was discerned there were 7 different variants in lightening cuts on FS stock SIG slides. I think my version is the one 3/4Flap refers to as the "gutted" model.

Slide + bbl + return spring & guide rod (+ grease) = 496g

Slide + bbl (+ grease) = 447g

Slide only (+ grease) = 328g

I have an XRay3 rear sight, Truglo front, and the GGI guide rod.

Here are the weights for my 2015 p320c with Trijicon hd sights. My slide has the lightening cuts that look like the second slide in Rhinowso’s first picture (which is the most gutted version of the compact as far as I’m aware). Edited to add: these measurements were made after having the drop safety issue fixed by Sig.

417 grams - slide, barrel, recoil spring
395 grams - slide, barrel
289 grams - slide only

Also, here is the link to jljones post on the lightening cuts. https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...0601935/m/6750048524
