Convert a .40 P229 to 9mm
I have at one point converted a P229 in .40 into a 9mm by swapping a P228 locking block and slide onto it, but that was some years ago and I forget what I had done now…recently got an insanely good deal on another P229 in .40, and I would like to drop a P229 9mm slide onto it. With all of the P228 vs P229 vs P229-1 vs P229R parts out there and possible, can anyone tell me which slides would work on this standard P229 .40 frame that I would need to procure? It would be greatly appreciated!

You have three options here:

Option 1 - P229-Legacy-9mm Slide (half-height serrations, short extractor) + P229-Legacy-9mm/P228 Barrel + P229-Legacy-9mm/P228 Locking Insert

Option 2 - P228 Slide (folded, internal extractor) + P229-Legacy-9mm/P228 Barrel + P229-Legacy-9mm/P228 Locking Insert

Option 3 - P229-1 Slide (full-height serrations, long extractor) + P229-1 Barrel + Your Current Locking Insert

For all three options, you'll ideally want to use a P229-1 magazine (although a P229-Legacy-9mm/P228 magazine will work too). The final piece of the puzzle is a 9mm-spec recoil spring. There have been several different versions over the years, but the overall specification has remained the same throughout all models of the P228, P229-Legacy-9mm, and P229-1, so any generation of the spring will be fine for all three options.

A lot of SIG enthusiasts (myself included) have found that mixing and matching these slides, barrels, and/or locking inserts sometimes works just fine because of tolerance stacking. This is best left considered as just a happy coincidence. The only "factory" way to perform these conversions is with the above three configurations.

Option 4 - Just buy a 9mm conversion barrel.

https://efkfiredragon.com/sig-...ion-standard-length/ (this is $259.99 for the caliber conversion barrel)

https://barsto.com/product/9mm-conversion-p-229/ (this is $250 for the caliber conversion barrel)

For serious business/social work, use the correct 9mm magazines and 9mm recoil spring.

I've read here on this Forum that the .40 magazines and recoil spring will work as is for 9mm using the caliber conversion barrel, but I personally would not do it for serious business, range use only.

Some barrels may require minor fitting, which is a potential hurdle with any barrel swap.

These conversion barrels are correctly sized for using your existing .40 S&W slide.

Sights/impact point on a target may be off a small amount. Usually you can get by using the existing .40 sights.

Doing the caliber conversion barrel also allows three calibers with one slide. 9mm, .40 S&W, .357 SIG all in one pistol, and one slide.

I definitely appreciate all of the info, thanks everybody for the replies. Now that my 40 P229 has shown up, did anyone tell me if I could drop a 9 mm P229 elite slide onto this without needing to adjust anything else?

Hi. According to the chart I included in this thread, you only need to drop the 9mm conversion barrel in such as

Thanks, that isn’t the route. I am interested in pursuing for this.

OP, you asked

It would be better to ask if a 9mm P229 slide with long extractor will work on top the P229 40 frame that still has the P229 40 LI installed.

If that is your qestion, then YES.

If you have a 9mm P229 slide with short extractor, then NO, you would need to change the P229 40 LI to a P228 or P229 Legacy LI.

Thanks

Confused. My P229 .40 slide has a short extractor and (obviously) a .40 LI. You say here that a 9mm P229 long extractor will work on a P229 .40 frame with a P229 .40 LI installed. If that is the case, is the extractor not irrelevant? In other words, my P229 is a .40, and has a short extractor/.40 LI, why would a long extractor work on a frame that originally has a short extractor/.40 LI?

Post #2 and my last post are clearly saying that the long extractor 9m slide AKA P229-1 9mm LONG extractor slide, will work on the p229 40 frame no matter what the p229 40 frame had on top. P229 40 slide be in short or long extractor uses the same p229 40 LI.

My last post was telling you what works for what you said you have. Hope you are good to go now.

Thanks

Nontypical
Any 229-1 slide will work on a P229 40. The early 228/229 9mm slides will work if the locking block is swapped out.

The 9mm P229-1 slide with LONG extractor is the ONLY drop in option that answers the OP's question. This would sugest the extractor length as it pertains to the 9mm slide is very relevant. Back to post #2 to clairify this.

Thanks
