Does anyone have one of the "John Wick" Compensators? If so, what is your opinion, does it reduce recoil and muzzle flip?

Waste of money on cosmetics. If you want a real compensator then get a threaded barrel and install one. This thing is just a weight.

It is a barrel weight, not an actual comp.

If it directs some of the gas from the discharge out the ports, why doesn’t it act like any other compensator? Why does a compensator have to be attached to the barrel?

How many AR compensators mount to the forearm rail and come close to the barrel but don't actually attach to the barrel?

High pressure gas escapes through the closest available opening. A comp that isn't attached to the barrel with a good enough seal to force the gas through the ports is not going to work.

Even if some of the gas escapes upward and to the side through the gap between the end of the unit and the front of the barrel, there would be some similar compensating effect.

The fact that most or all of AR compensators are attached to the barrel demonstrates that that’s the most effective way of producing the compensation effect, not that it’s the only way. And of course, even if there were some advantage to mounting an AR compensator that was not physically attached to the barrel, it would be more difficult than this setup.

It would be interesting to see a high speed video of this device in action to see what actually happens to the gas. Keep in mind that when an autoloading pistol is fired, the bullet leaves the barrel well before there is any significant movement of the slide to the rear. The videos I found aren’t slow motion, but at least one clearly shows some of the flash and blast being directed out of the ports, and that’s all that happens with any compensator. One reviewer confirms that by remarking that there is more muzzle blast concussion if the gun is fired in a confined space like between lane walls at an indoor range.

With this device some of the gas will escape through the gap between the slide and back of the compensator, but not all of it—as is visible in at least one video.

And that I must absolutely disagree with. When a cartridge is discharged, the resulting gas expands on its own. If it encounters a barrier like the metal of the barrel, the cartridge case, or a muzzle device, it will stop moving in that direction; if it doesn’t, however, it will keep moving (expanding), and that includes through any ports. In fact, to talk of gas being “forced” through a port is an inaccurate statement because (some of) the gas is simply given an opportunity to flow through the port as it expands naturally. The only way it would be forced in a particular direction is if there were no other ways it could go. In the case of a ported barrel or even most muzzle devices, including sound suppressors, some, if not most, of the gas goes straight out the barrel in the direction of the bullet.

I have one and it assuredly works. One way you can tell is to have somebody fire your weapon with you standing to the side.

You can tell it is redirecting gas/report

There was a "weight" that came with the P226 Sport.

Why wouldn't it work? No I'm not advocating this comp or how "well" it may or may not work, just arguing that it might work perfectly fine. If the thought is that gas will take the first exit and not have enough gas volume left for the compensator to work, explain how comps and other type porting on revolvers that work just fine. The cylinder gap is definitely before any ports or end compensator cutouts on a revolver, but the expanding gasses still manage to have enough volume to make compensators on revolvers effective. Now are they as effective as the sealed barrel end type comp? Probably not, but that doesn't mean this design doesn't work at all.

I’m afraid I’m not as cool as Keanu reeves and would need a lot more fire power than a P30 if someone killed my dog.

I have the one from HK parts and it makes the pistol look pretty cool ala John Wick. Haven’t actually shot the gun with it installed so I can’t comment on the comp portion. I bought it for the coolness factor.

HK-USA is selling one made by Parker Mountain Machine now. Looks a lot better IMO, and attaches to a threaded barrel:
