Just reporting back that based upon the expert opinions in this thread: https://sigforum.com/eve/forums...950094354#8950094354

I was able at the range, on Saturday, to get my son to accurately and consistently hit the target shooting my Walther PPQ-22. Knowing what to do made it simple to teach. He was really encouraged based upon his consistent accuracy. Long guns are a little different. He shoots them fine with a scope or red dot. I’m not sure what to do with a shotgun as he is right handed but left eye dominant (He has been seeing an opthamologist for years based upon eye issues). But for now, we have made major improvements.

FWIW I'm right handed and left eye dominant. I shoot long guns left shoulder/left eye and handguns right handed/left eye.

I also shoot right handed and am left eye dominant. I played a lot of baseball, and later golf, growing up. So, I guess it seems natural to me.

Wondered how I’d missed that conversation, then say it was in the Lounge. Don’t go there often.

Cross dominant can be an issue, but one that can be overcome. I am, and pistols aren’t a big deal. Red dots kinda turn into dashes, but still not too bad. Scopes...well they’re okay for a bit but I have to close my eyes every now and then when focus fades. But mine isn’t so bad that I have to shoot lefty.

Glad you guys are on track. Be patient and assuming your son is still young, make sure he understands that you’re proud he’s willing to put in the extra work to be good that others don’t have to. It’ll pay off for him in the long run.

Nice! Glad to hear progress is being made.
With shotguns, shooting lefty is DEFINITELY the way to go.
So much better than the various band-aids to shoot with the wrong eye behind the rib. In no time at all it will become second nature to him.

Congratulations on some success.

What about trying to have him shoot with both eyes open? I shoot a lot of trap and it's about half and half with people shooting shotguns with one eye open or both. Same with pistols, some people shoot with both eyes open. It's worth a try.

If you carry a pistol for self defense, you best shoot with both eyes open because in a serious sudden conflict you will by nature keep both eyes on the threat and have tunnel vision as well...same reason a laser is pretty useless in CQB, takes too long to acquire the red or green dot.

I have thought of a Browning BPS as it is ambidextrous for ejection and the safety.

I am also having him shoot with both eyes open.

Same here, and never considered it an issue at all when I bought my first handgun. (I didn't check the internet though, so I may have completely missed the entire issue!

)

I did recently take up Precision Pistol shooting and simply switched to using my left hand for that discipline as cross dominance was a bit awkward for that.

Good to hear that he is shooting better!

Meh.

This little jewel keeps getting passed around as tactic lore and truisms. Putting bullet mass on target stops threats, not passing an eye exam. If a shooter has the ability to run both eyes open, yeah, it'll be a hair faster, but trying to shoot both eyes open as a tactical truism, is a waste of time. Quite frankly, it is about as useless as the whole "NEVER LOOK AT YOUR HOLSTER" stuff that trainers have been vomitting back for decades. Do what you need to and score your hits. Both eyes open. One eye open. Both eyes closed. Score your hits.

Because in a high stress situation, you'll do as you train. If that training includes closing an eye, yep, you'll do it.

I was trained to shoot with my dominant eye, I've been trying to teach myself "both eyes open" for a couple of years now. Guess what happens when I'm at a match or on the timer by myself, yup, my right eye open, left eye closed. I acquire the sight quicker, see it clearer and shoot better with more confidence with right eye open.
