So, i was clicking around the internet and found a nice 4506-1 smith for sale. 1 mag, no box, $850. Is this in line or have smith's really gone up this much? My last was a 4583 TSW for like 475. It as a lot more used, but still... i figure it's not something I'm likely to find again soon and I'm still kicking myself for missing the 4566s from the WVSP. But this is good 1911 territory or a modified 97b. A Perpetual Disappointment...

I bought one NOS NIB maybe 12 years ago for around $550. I let it go for less than that. Probably should have kept it. They are almost comically huge the and the heavy high bore axis slide cycles almost in slow motion when you fire it. Reliable and accurate, with very good DA pull.

I always wanted one especially seeing my buddies dad carry them for Cols OH PD when I was growing up. I always kick myself for not getting one of the 4506 or a 457. I guess it depends on what the condition is. As much as I want one to me $850 is a lot but I am cheap. Wolfe21 Did the 4506-1 come with Novak sights on the site that you looked at? I always keep an eye out for one, and the last couple of months that seems to be the going rate. At least on the auction sites I looked at. There is a discussion on the SW forum that is about two months old discussing what the 4506 are selling for. Most of the members responses are that the pistols are selling for anywhere between 700-1000.

We have a couple of bonafide experts here on the forum when it comes to all things third gen. My belief is that they have just gone up that much. They aren’t made any longer and the demand is still there.

Before the current stupidity with ammo and gun prices started, a clean 4506-1 with box, docs and two or three mags was bringing $650 to $800. A lot of that depended on whether it was LNIB and what area of the country it was in. My LAPD friends, who still seek out and carry 4506-1s on duty, tell me that clean examples have been bringing +$1K for over three years out there. So, $850 for a clean 4506-1 is a fair deal. Not a steal, but then again, they aren't making any more of them and it is a lot of gun for the money. Late production examples and those made in increments of 50 or more to fill LE orders - after the "official end of production" - display startling accuracy and excellent triggers. And I've yet to experience a malfunction with any 4506-1 that I own or have shot. As far as comparing the 4506-1 with the 1911, the 4506-1 is slightly wider in the slide and an ounce heavier than an all steel 1911. And you never seem to hear "1911 guys" whining about the weight. A good holster and a real gunbelt go a long way to carrying a 4506-1 comfortably, all day. I still do it. The other major difference between a 4506-1 and a 1911 is the 4506-1 is reliable. Right out of the box. With no "break in period". And the 4506-1 eats ammo that will choke a 1911. Bullet shape and OAL, don't matter. If it will go in the mag, it will feed in the 4506-1. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself. Make mine a 4506-1 and keep those finicky, expensive, malfunction prone 1911s. I am sure the handwringers will be along shortly to tell you about "...no manufacturer support!" and "...no spare parts!". Well, as far as I am concerned S&W went out of business in 2001. And besides, I wouldn't send them a gun I cared about or depended on. There isn't a real gunsmith left there. In almost 3 decades of shooting 4506s, I have yet to break anything. Not one thing. On five different guns. With a total round count far higher than the"average owner" will ever run through one. So buy with confidence. Hope this helps! That is good to hear i guess. I have a few other third gens, I just have never spent anywhere close to this for one. I missed a couple good deals lately ($600 P229 ESE, 4516 pd trade most recently) and don't want to make the same mistake. The one I'm looking at is Novak equipped. A Perpetual Disappointment...

I believe that the majority of the 4506-1s made were Novak low mount equipped. The adjustable sight versions seem to appear less often.......except on T.V. and in movies and bring a little more money when they do. I own examples of both and like them equally. I have seen no difference in accuracy or reliability or ease of use. Mags are still available, contrary to what you may hear. And pricing on them runs from $35 to $60 to ridiculous. Ebay seems to have both the reasonable and the ridiculous available. Midwayusa and Numrichs have the components to build mags, or rebuild well used examples. Holsters can be problematic, but I am left handed too. I find like new holsters on Ebay and Gunbroker. Holsters for the 645, 1006 and SOME non fitted holsters for Beretta 92FS work with the 4506-1. Be sure and get a real gunbelt with a spring steel or hard plastic liner if you intend to carry the 4506-1. I find a pancake holster works best to distribute the weight evenly. My favorite is an Aker pancake which was very popular with LAPD plainclothes officers who still carry 4506-1s. Great pistol the 4506-1. Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI 7+1 Rounds of hope and change

Miami Vice made the 4606 famous. Enjoy it. In ten years the price you paid will look like a bargain. La Dolce Vita

I associate it more with Vic Mackey. Vice was the Bren Ten all day long.

I remember Crockett carrying a variety of pistols during that show, but the Bren Ten always stood out to me. It was the last season ('88-89?) that he lugged the 4506...if I remember correctly.

I had a hell of a time teaching him to decock before holstering jljones. Did it go any better when you taught him all that John Wick gunjitsu? 7+1 Rounds of hope and change

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the gun |
Superb pistol. Accurate, extremely reliable. If you buy it, immediately search for more spare mags and recoil springs. It is one of the few Smith semi auto pistols that I wish they still made.

To all of you who are serving or have served our country, Thank You |
Classic good looking, reliable, and American made metal work. I just don't think you are going to find nice 3rd gen S&W prices going down at this point. Many years have now passed since they made them new.

^Agreed^, had my share of 3rd Gen S&Ws. Love em all. They are even better when worked over by a good smiths like Novaks folks.

I have a 4506-1 that S&W converted to DAO. Do you have an idea who I could send the gun to to have it re-converted back to DA/SA? S&W will not do it. I’m pretty sure I still have all the parts.

I use a member of the S&W forum, BMCM, for my gunsmithing needs. He is an FFL in Natchez MS. VERY talented fellow. I can put you in touch with him. Or you can PM him if you are a member there. He could do the job, easy. If you have the parts - fast too. Numrich or Midwayusa should have the decocker in stock. If you need any assistance please feel free to shoot me an Email. cdajpw@gmail.com I'm working at the range all day today. I'll return Email when I get back. I've had a couple 4506's awesome guns. If you run out of ammo, just run up and hit them with it, kills them just the same. Heavy, heavy, and a hip killer for 8 hours. I also have a 4566. True as you can be 1911 killer. Mags are not to hard to find if you know where to look and keep an eye out for them. "da evil Count Glockula."-Para
