New Ruger 5.7
I had the opportunity to shoot the new Ruger alongside an FN 5.7. First time shooting either pistol. I much preferred the FN. It fit my hand better, and was much flatter shooting. While there isn't a ton of recoil to start with, for me the FN was just much more comfortable and easier to shoot. If I were in the market for a 5.7 pistol I'd buy the FN hands down.

I'd almost be willing to bet they've got a carbine designed and going through the testing phase as they're rolling out the pistol.

5.7x28 performance out of a pistol is one thing. Out of a 16" barrel, it's another. Cross-marketing the two is the only logical conclusion. If they're going to enter a market that FN has had a monopoly of, one can bet they're going to chop at both legs and not just one.

One of the dozen SHOT show videos I watched had a guy say it’s a poorly kept secret that they are coming out with a PDW in 5.7.

There is also supposed to be 3-4 other manufacturers coming out with their version of the pistol.

I have absolutely no use for this pistol and yet for some reason I want one.

JSW I had that exact sentiment. Then I bought one when my local dealer got 150 of them in and was selling them for $629. I grabbed one, a couple boxes of ammo (FN vmax and Fed Am Eagle) and went to the range. It was a blast !! Long range, really accurate, no recoil, and still hits the steel plates really hard at 100 yards.
I usually like to think my guns all have a purpose but for the 57 I am just telling myself it’s a fun gun.

If there was ever a cartridge to get a person into reloading, the 5.7 would be it. It would probably bring the cost down to 18¢ a round using your brass.

I don't think that adding one more 5.7 pistol will drop the price of ammunition from 50 cents per round to 30 cents per round.

^^ Have you seen the price difference between the FN and the Ruger?

Yes. But I’d think there are a lot of frequent shooters whose joy at getting their unusual-caliber firearm at a great price has been replaced by the realization that what they’ve had to spend on ammunition has probably upside-downed that “deal.”

I can't think of a worse cartridge to start your reloading adventure. I'm sure there might be something worse and the more knowledgeable can advise for fun. but its a miserable thing to deal with. not recommended for anyone starting out.

When I first started shooting 5.7x28 (like 15? years ago) I paid $800 for a 2000 rnd case. So that's .40/round in then dollar terms and .50/round in today's dollars. The price of ammo has not moved much excepting the various scares and shortages. The person who 'casually' thinks they are getting a great deal on the Ruger is really going to be shocked by the cost of feeding it if they actually shoot it. Especially in today's market where easy enough to have .30 5.56 and .18 9mm.
As I said above I really like that Ruger gives you a way to get an optic on this and so I'll buy one even though I have plenty of FN. But no way is this going to make the market for 5.7 suddenly map to 5.56 or 9mm ammo pricing.

Ammo selection is definitely... limited. Very limited. No temptation here.
