A couple weeks ago I reconnected with an old friend of mine. I've known him for over 30 years but we lost touch about ten years ago. We knew each other through the gun industry and both of us hung out at the same gun store for years.

I had a gun question and thought I should reach out to him. He was a deputy with the local Sheriff's department and had retired about ten years ago and then had a gun store for a bit. So, I gave him a call and come to find out he isn't doing very well health wise. He has diabetes and is in kidney failure. I was shocked to hear the news to say the least.

He has a Jeep that he wanted to get ready to sell so I went over to his house to see what I could do to help. Once I arrive we chat up for a while and then he hands me his Sig P220. It was his duty gun for about five years and he wants me to have it. He is purging his gun collection and passing guns to family and close friends. I was really taken a back from his gesture. It meant something for him to give me his gun and it really moved me.

We ended up going to an FFL to do the transfer and then went out to lunch and talk about the good old days. We are not sure how much time he has on this mortal planet, but I'm glad I reached out. Not for the gun, but to rekindle a friendship that both of us could use.

Good story and having that gun will make it FAR more than a gun. It’s an anchor to your friend and that’s never a bad thing.

Side note that is a well cared for duty gun.

Good to hear about the reconnection. Enjoy the time to make new memories, and re-live the old ones.

I have a Kimber of an old co-worker (also LE) that has passed. I also feel I'll never sell it, it meant a lot to the family for me have it. I have considered having it laser engraved with a badge with his number on it.

This answers the question when is a gun not a gun. That's a lot of words that went with him handing his gun to you and not one of them needed to be said.

That's really moving.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

A very similar situation happened to me within the last week. One of my former coworkers who retired several years before me ran into each other at our local FOP lodge monthly meeting. He asked if I was still into buying and selling guns as he had some that he wanted to sell. Long story short my son bought two of the ones he was offering. As we talked he said that he was on the verge of going on dialysis as his kidney function was failing and he didn’t want to leave stuff like this to his wife to deal with eventually.

I just lost my best friend from med school and post-grad training; he, his wife and kids had all been very close to us starting with 49 years ago.

We knew he had pulmonary fibrosis (same as what Jim Allen had), but thought with new medications he would have more years left with us. Nope, had a catastrophic event, died quickly just after Thanksgiving.

Don't have a gun from him; but have lots of other toys, recipes, ways to do things I will always associate with Ned. He was larger than life.
