4MUL8RP224 Sight Upgrade Inquiry
The new 2013-vintage P224 .40 S&W is amazing. First range trip suggests that the POI requires a six o'clock hold. This is not as expected, but I can live with it.
The rear sight is a 10, and the front sight is an 8. For .40 S&W practice ammo, it seems that the slow projectile recoil may be rolling the pistol upwards just a touch requiring that six o'clock hold. Not sure what it would do with Hornady Critical Duty with 175 grain at 1050 fps.
But, the sights -- cue the TV show "they're dead Jim." I believe they are Meprolight. I've e-mailed that company to inquire if the vials can be relamped.
Reason I ask is that new Trijicon HD XR sights would be $200, including shipping to Trijicon. If relamping could be done, for half that cost, so much better for me.
But, relamping assumes that the 10/8 sight numbers are correct! I don't know why Sig would put 10/8 sights on the pistol. They are date coded AM, 2013, so being dead and same year as the pistol suggests the sights are original.
How would you all approach this situation?
1. Pay the man...send the slide to
Trijicon for what I want, and what I have on the P229. Here, what sight number pair do I order? Trijicon does not show 10/8 available.
2.
Relamp existing sights at Meprolight? Here, see if they will update the vials to orange front and plain rear like Trijicon HD.
3.
Send to Sig for sights ... about 60% the cost of Trijicons. Recent complaints on this forum suggest this is not good. And, looking at the lack of wear and tear on this pistol I don't see that I need the Sig Service Package, even though that would be only $150. I'm concerned that Sig won't have parts for the P224 anyway.

hiprollcA #8 front and #10 rear on the P224 40 is common and “generally” what SIG uses. Previously, I purchased the Trijicon SG01R-10 as a replacement for the #10 rear, but those are no longer in production. The one "off the shelf" option that is readily available is from Ameriglo for about $60...
https://www.ameriglo.com/products/details/xd-191rThe factory height of the #10 rear is 0.270 inches. If you plan to also swap the #8 front, the height is 0.220 inches.
While it is common for the 9 mm and 357 Sig P224 models to use the same #8 front and #8 rear, I have two factory new in box P224 357 Sig models that have #10 front (0.210 inch) and #10 rear (0.270 inch) sights.
From my experience, shoot with the dead sights, as you have done, and make adjustments accordingly, which is why some Sig pistols stray from the norm regarding standard sights.

4MUL8RThanks for personal experience.
I wonder if the 40 requires only a two number difference in height?
8 rear 6 front might be same relative height?

hiprollcAs an FYI, a #8 rear is 0.250" and a #6 front is 0.230", or 0.02" delta, whereas the factory #10R is 0.270" and the #8F is 0.220", or 0.05" delta. The only other "Sig" sight number option that will provide the exact same delta height would be by using a #9 rear (0.260") and a #10 front (0.210"), and those could also be hard to find.
Remember, the higher the front sight number, the lower the sight’s height, and the higher the rear sight number, the higher the sight’s height.
For any change, either front or rear, as the sight numbers go up, your groups go up and, as the sight numbers go down, your groups go down.

4MUL8RExcellent thoughts.
If today the delta is 0.050 and the POI is high, maybe the 8R 8F with delta of 0.030 would lower the POI.
Or, I could relamp existing and just enjoy an old-fashioned six o'clock hold.

hiprollcThat is exactly where I would start, as it is probably the easiest, cheapest, and most readily available option.

powermadI needed an 8/10 set for my .40 229.
I got a rear sight from Ameriglo for a Springfield XD, they use a .220" front and .270" tall rears.

4MUL8RJust heard back from Meprolight. This company does NOT relamp sights, while Trijicon does. So, new sights are potentially needed, and new Trijicons would be practical for relamping in twelve years.
I'll do some more practice to see if the 10R / 8F combination is a six o'clock hold or not. If it is, I may change to 8R / 8F.
And, then the question will be Sig for $120 or Trijicon for $200.
