I just picked up a nice sonic cleaner. I've been using it for cleaning my suppressor. Save's me a ton of work/time.

My question is a lot of my pistols have optics on them. For the folks using sonic cleaners for their pistols, what are you doing? Are you removing the optics and then putting them back on after cleaning and then re-zeroing the optic.

Just curious.

Sorry - I guess my point is taking the optic on/off then re-zeroing might be more work and I might be better off just cleaning the slide manually. I was just wondering what others were doing.

Yes, manual cleaning would be alot less hassle. when using a sonic cleaner I just put in small parts and barrel. sometimes a plain slide.

It's not that hard to remove most red dots. 2-4 screws. If the slide is so filthy that I really want a thorough cleaning, I remove the red dot. So far, IME, I haven't seen any noticeable change in zero. But I have only done this with self-defense guns and range guns, I suppose if I were working on a competition level gun ....maybe a good shooter ( not me) would notice a change.

Just me. I am not taking an optic off a slide to clean it. That falls in the really, really dumb category to me. I never, ever, trust an optic after dismounting it and I have to go spend some time confirming its zero. Slides are not a bunch of complex parts and getting one clean is really not that big a deal. And cleaning one in a sonic cleaner 'intact' also falls in the wtf category. Some of the parts are easy enough to toss in there, but the whole thing, no.

Hand clean the slide!

Even if you're into taking the optic off and on and re-zeroing all the time, it's unnecessary wear and tear on the threads with the screws that you don't want.

And you need something to do while the rest of the gun is in the cleaner.
