Sold my P220 ST last month and miss it. So I purchased an excellent condition WG 228 last month. It came with original box, target etc but only 1 dovetailed magazine. I'm looking for more mags I am getting confused on which mags will fit. Only interested in flush fit Sig or Mecgar mags in 13 + capacity. I want at least one other dovetailed mag but usually keep at least 6 mags per gun. Maybe even get some 226 mags later, but do all 228/229/M11 fit? I was a Sig police armorer years ago and should know the answer. But I have been seduced by HK, Glock and 3rd gen S&W's for awhile.

P228 & 229 mags are identical & intercompatible. Where the confusion lies is in 229-1 mags. The older legacy mags have a single groove on the side. The 229-1 mags for newer 229s & M11-A1 have two grooves and are slightly wider, which prevent them from fitting in older legacy 228/229 magwells. I don't believe there were ever mags w/ M11 markings, but someone more knowledgeable than I (paging Q) could confirm. Functionally, the best mags for a P228 are flush-fit 15rd Mec-Gars. They cost less too. Aesthetically, for a legacy gun such as a W German P228, I like to have at least a couple period-correct mags, i.e., 13rds, dovetailed, and made in Germany or Italy.

The 228 and legacy slide 229 9mm use different mags than the later 229's, the 229-1. You need these ones. https://gregcotellc.com/cart/s...mgp22815b-p-619.html

The simplest answer for you (the W. German P228) would be, if you see any mag marked or labeled 229-1 (aka E2), do NOT buy. Everything else is gtg. Q

I just looked at my 8 mags that I have for my SIG M11-A1 and they all say "229-1" on them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Democracy is 2 Wolves & a Lamb debating the lunch menu. Exactly! The M11-A1 is about as close to the P228 as the P225-A1 is to the original classic P225. Q
