tmulheronSig p320 rails
Why does the carry model have three lugs and the compact have four? Just curious as the barrel length is the same and only difference is the grip.

I have a P320 Carry and a P320 Compact, both with .40 S&W and .357 Sig 3.9" barrels. I have often wondered why the accessory rails are different, but use the same length barrel. Never have heard a reason why this was done. I guess it was just the way that Sig set them up and there you go !

Thank you for the clarification, it makes sense now. Like "Q" said, who knows.

toivoHere's a theory: To make the Carry frame, SIG starts with a Full frame and lops off the muzzle end. I've seen some Carry frames where the finish on that end was a bit ... rough.

A very good theory that I had not thought of!

kkinaMessage: Can you answer a question? Why does the accessory rail on the P320 Compact have 4 locking lugs, while the Carry version has only 3? Thank you.

Thank you for contacting SIG SAUER. Unfortunately, we do have an error on the display pictures on the website. The pictures should be reversed. We have made our web team aware of the issue.

What the heck are they talking about? Check the images of the real guns that are available online. The Carry has 3 lugs and the Compact 4.

That's the correct reason. The Carry frames are full sized frames with the dust cover cut to fit the 3.9 slide and barrel.
The compact frames have their own mold.
This info is straight from Sig.
Sig have been doing this from the start with the carry models. This was done to give a compact slide and barrel more magazine capacity for potential LE/Mil customers.
Sig was one of the first to start with the modern mullet guns.

nhracecraftThat 'might' be true for the std P320 Frames, at least initially, but it's definitely NOT the case with the P320 X-Carry, OR the P320 X-Series Carry sized Grip Modules. I've got a factory P320 X-Carry Pistol and multiple X-Series Carry sized Grip Modules and every one on them have mold marks on the front of the dust cover. And none have been cut down or modified in ANY way!
Honestly, I don't see how it's even accurate for the std P320 Carry though. The sides of the dust cover on the Grip Module are beveled to match beveling present on the Slide. I don't have any, but every pic I've seen that actually shows the front of dust cover and/or a complete P320 Carry sized Pistol shows mold marks. Here's a couple of examples:
Further, it make NO sense for SIG to do that anyway! Based on the production volume, a dedicated mold actually makes more sense from a manufacturing standpoint. When you amortize the cost of the mold across the number of Grip Modules produced, it costs less than adding add'l manufacturing processes that are likely NOT automated and also are more likely to affect product quality. They may have modified grip modules early on, and likely did during prototyping/product development, but I seriously doubt they'd choose that as the method of manufacture!

Is it possible that they did it at first as a sort of experiment with that configuration, and then created molds when they decided the Carry model was a "keeper"? The beveling could be done with a sanding jig, and as I said, I've seen some Carry frames with a kind of rough front end. Then when they decided to create a mold, they may have just stuck with the same rail configuration as the prototypes, if that's what they were.
Check this out: the front ends of P320 grip frames. From left to right it's Subcompact, Carry, and Compact. Look at the bevels. The Carry is definitely different from the other two. The beveled area is narrower and its rear edge slants the other way as the other two. Also, the bottom section of the Carry frame isn't angled back as sharply as the other two.

Yeah, how can they bullshit you like that? Their pictures shouldn't be "reversed" anything. They are correct representations of their real hardware.

ElToroAnd then there’s the 320 xframe. I have the x compact. Grip size is perfect for me but I wish the slide was a scosh longer. It comes with the 3.6 inch barrel. I have a 3.9 inch barrel and carry slide on order which sig says will fit. Seems like the naming department at Sig gets drunk.

creedbratton2Because sig! The 320 and the 320x rails are also slightly different. For example the tlr-1 with a p320 key sits flush against the trigger guard on a 320 but not on the x-carry.
These are the questions that keep me up at night.
