It sounds like you would like to end up with a convertible 45/10 P220. So selling what you have and buying a Legion in 10MM Auto is not the answer for you.
The frames are the same, that is not the issue. For this to work the locking inserts need to be the same as well. Though you could swap locking inserts when you change slides, it is just more work.
While you could make this happen with an alloy framed P220, an alloy frame is not a good idea from the standpoints of firearm longevity and shooter safety

Your friend (and all who do this) is causing the extractor to be what the 40 S&W is head spacing on. As you have already observed, this does work. Unfortunately this practice puts extra stress on the extractor and depending on the firearm's design, usually leads to early extractor failure.
I am guessing that this is not a money saving issue since a Legion slide and barrel in 10MM Auto is going to be pricey. We also know that you do not like the feel of the SIG double stack pistols already availble in 40S&W (P224, P226 & P229)
Is there a reason that you want to keep this as a SIG Firearm? The cost of the Legion slide w/barrel in 10MM Auto plus some magazines will be as much or possibly even more expensive than buying a pistol already chambered in 40S&W
There are many single stack pistols chambered in the 40S&W cartridge that have been offered over the years. I admit that most of those choices are from S&W
As another solution, you could acquire a slide that is intended for 10MM Auto (remember this might require a locking piece as well) and have one of the custom barrel makers create a 40S&W barrel for you. You still need new magazines for this pistol
