Why no P220 RX? Login/Join

Given the rise in popularity of red dots why doesn't Sig offer the P220 RX? Is there something about the recoil characteristics in either 45 or 10mm that make it incompatible with an RDS?

I'm thinking about getting some 45s and a 10mm machined but wonder if there's a technical reason not to.

Does anyone have any insight into this, or has anyone set their P220 up with an RDS - how has it worked out?

Thanks

Rob

My guess Sig just prioritizes on potential volume and P220's sure aren't in that group. That said I've milled just about everything I own and a P220 .45 is in that group. Run a RMR and all is just fine with respect to technical issues.
I doubt the 10mm version would be any different but find one of the milling guys and discuss it.

Yep, I’d say that’s spot on.

I have been thinking of milling my P220 ASE and my SP2022. What stops me so far is want an optic for each gun and my budget is not up to snuff. Maybe this winter.

hrcjon, who is your best milling experience? I have numerous P220, P220/10, and P227 up for milling, with the 10 being first. Have been waiting for that damned R2 for a couple years. I'm told by SIG the R1P is not up to that task.

Generally SIG is not so interested in the P2XX classics, but keep them there so as not to offend the die hards. They are going full Glock. Except event Glock supports more than 9mm while SIG definitely just doesn't care about non-9mm.

FN has been doing their FNX-45 Tactical for ages now. And factory 10mm 1911s with an RDS already onboard have been around for a while (Kimber, for example).

L&M Precision did the majority of my P Series guns, but Mark has now retired so that is not an option.
Parker Mountain Machine did a few for me when lead times were an issue but has also done many, many other projects and I can recommend Jarod unconditionally. But to be fair I have not checked that they will do a 220 10mm.
I'd post here on SF and get an idea on what are today's options. I am not looking as I've already milled quite a few so am not current.

The P220 is on life support. Dont hold your breath.

They probably sell 400 P320's for every P220 they sell.

Another vote for PMM. I had a P229 milled there a couple of months ago and recommend them.

Let me know where you live in NOVA. I'm about to send my P220/10 out for milling this month

Why ruin a perfectly good gun by milling it for a sight? Find a good gunsmith and have him build you a sight mount that does not alter the gun. I did it several years ago with a P220x6 and it worked wonderfully. (sold it to a member here a couple of year ago.)

As far as I know we have 3 ways to get a workable optic on a pistol. A bridge mount of some kind, a mount that uses the sight cut on the slide and milling the slide.
The first two absolutely suck in many ways. The optic is much higher than it needs to be, there is difficulty for backup irons and the ability to holster it reasonably is gone. For a gaming gun do whatever you think works, there are still open class guns that win with bridge mounts as there are other considerations in play especially in 1911's. But nobody is gaming with a 220 in 10mm. And I would object to the idea of ruining as a concept. YMMV of course. But go to a match where people are challenged to find the best solutions and see what the majority of people find the best solution and it won't be anything but milling the slide. YMMV of course.

The SIG Armorer offers optic cuts on P22X guns. My understanding is he has them cut by Vulcan Machine but I know at least one satisfied customer.

One thing I did not see mentioned, the OP did not mention the age and type of slide on their P220. I'm assuming only the newer one piece slides would be suitable for RDS milling. I don't think there would be enough "meat" on the older two piece slides.
