I was King of the Fudds today!

2000Z-71I was King of the Fudds today!
Great day at the range today. I’d did revolver day with my 617, 686 and 610 Mountain Guns. Only 1 other shooter on the range and he was at the other end working with an RSO on holster qualification.
Started off with 617. After a couple of cylinders an old fart of a range officer walked up and asked,
“How many rounds does that thing hold?”
“10.”
“Is that a Mountain Gun?”
“Yep, wanna shoot it?”
He shot it, had a big smile on his face. Then offered to take it home and clean it for me, I declined.
With the 686, switching to the new style Smith & Wesson rubber grips made a huge difference over the wood Bear Hugs that it came with. Sighted in better today and it’s possible to stay on paper without running out of sight adjustment since I switched to a taller rear sight blade. Problem is it’s a V-notch blade I had laying around after swapping to the LPI fiber optic sights on my 329. That said, the sight picture of V-notch rear and gold bead front does not make for a precision setup. This gun has definitely been a project; a trip back to the factory for warranty work, replaced rear sight and replaced the grips to finally have a reliable revolver that I can comfortably shoot.
Then there was the 610. Though not as big a difference, the rubber grips on this gun are also an improvement. After a couple of cylinders, another old fart RSO came by.
“What’s that chambered in?”
“10mm.”
“In a revolver? How’s that?”
“Moon clips. Wanna’ shoot it?”
Another big smile after shooting it.
My buddy and I used to make fun of the Fudds at the range. Bullseye shooters with their tackle boxes with spotting scopes mounted on them. Benchrest shooters with heavy rifles chambered for weird short and fat cartridges who fired an average of 1 round every 30 minutes. We joke now that we are the Fudds and I kind of felt like one today shooting revolvers. But hey, all the RSO’s thought I was King of the Fudds with my revolvers.

ruger357I wouldn’t want to mess with a man with a revolver he’s been carrying and shooting for 40 years.
Revolvers are cool again with the mountain guns and cowboy guns. I have bought several revolvers this year.

captain127I am a fellow revolver fan, but bring a fudd is more about political stance than the actual gun you shoot.
Growing up in NY over the years of oppressive gun restrictions, fudd generally means anyone who thinks only hunting and shotgun sports guns are legitimate guns for civilian purposes. For years the NY fudds ( this of course is not all hunters and clays shooters but a sadly large percentage of them) would happily throw handgun enthusiasts and “ black rifle” to the wolves and support politicians seeking legislative restrictions on these types of guns. They ( time and further legislation proved them very wrong) believed if we let them legislators go after black rifles and pistols they wouldn’t dare go after our “ legitimate “ sports guns. Of course after bludgeoning those groups legislation started to impact the fudds and of course the whining commenced

HoundogThe SW610 a great pistol. I haven't shot mine in a while. Got to find the ammo box with 10mm and my moon clips. I have the version with a 6" barrel. Bought it used and the prior owner must have done some trigger work on it as single action it probably has a 2 pound trigger. The weight of the pistol makes the recoil very mild (or you can shoot 40SW if you want to make it really soft shooting). And the gun is an absolute tack driver.
A really under appreciated pistol. And with a little practice reloading with moon clips is almost as fast as a mag change.
Oh, and as someone who generally spends about 2 months in upstate NY every year (where I only hang out with trap shooters since I can't bring my AR's, suppressors, pistols, etc. along with me) I would say most of the guys I know support the rights of all gun owners.

That is the only definition I’ve ever associated with the term, and which is based on Elmer Fudd, the inept hunter character in Bugs Bunny cartoons.
I ask because is that yet another thing whose definition has changed in popular usage and I must now learn to keep up?

Chuck PerryI alternate pistol types on my range trips, it's either all revolvers or all autos. I take the revolvers a lot more than the autos, especially the 617.

I think the term is changing from it's original meaning, I see it quite often used to just describe someone that would just be considered "old fashioned" in their views. I've seen guys called fudds for simply not seeing a purpose for optics on pistols, not liking polymer/striker fired pistols or even just preferring revolvers to semi-autos.

Ah, yes: like so many other terms. Perhaps I’m now a Fudd myself for not staying current with the cultural shifts
du jour.
At least poor old Elmer can take comfort in just being old-fashioned, not that he was a bad hunter.
Thanks for the explanation.

This happens often. A buzz word gains traction. It enters mainstream usage, but then mainstream users lose sight of its original meaning. People may be unable to accurately define the word, but they know it's a
bad word; therefore, they throw it around loosely as a pejorative & insult.
Fudd specifically relates to one's 2A stance, although I've been guilty of describing guys who say things such as, "Any handgun caliber that doesn't start w/ a 4 is inadequate for self-defense," as spouting Fudd lore. Shooters who dislike modern advances in firearms are better described as retro-grouches, as along as they aren't supporting Assault Weapon bans.
Commie/communist is another example. During the late 20th century, people would throw around that insult often, even though most couldn't really describe what communism was. They did know that, the Soviet Union were the bad guys.
Nowadays, you hear that used w/
fascist. E.g., Antifa claimed to be fighting against fascism, thought few Antifa members could describe in detail what fascism is. It's more, "
Fascism is anything I disagree with. If you don't believe in climate change, you're a fascist."
I often hear
pedo applied to anyone involved in a romantic relationship w/ a large age gap. A
pedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to prepubescent & younger children. There's nothing pedophilic about an adult man coupling up w/ an adult woman young enough to be his daughter.
Lately I've been hearing
scalper used extremely broadly. Apparently, anyone who buys something expecting it to appreciate in value &/or resells it for profit is a scalper. House flippers are scalpers. If you buy gold & silver, you're a scalper. Everyone w/ IRAs, 401Ks - scalpers too.
One more is
Boomer, since, "OK Boomer," took off as a meme. If you ask people in Gen Z & Alpha to define a Boomer, they'll probably say, "Anyone age 40+."

.
I'm only 41, but half my pistols are revolvers and most of my future handgun acquisition interests are wheelguns as well. No, I'm not so much of a fudd that I want to trade my 18 round polymer semi-auto duty gun for a Smith 66, but I've pretty much got those bases covered and I don't need more. Trainees always look at me like I'm some kind of geezer when we start talking backup guns and I show them my pocket 642, lol.

IronworkerI am a retired guy. I guess look like a Fudd. A friend and I went to a public range once. There is no range officer, you pay at the entrance and drive up to the range. When we got to the range there were a couple of younger guys already there. As we were getting out of the car, one of them approached us and said they had a couple of assault rifles with them, but they were legal and for us not to get excited. We said ok. I forget now he had with him, but my friend has several Class III guns. We got all set up and my friend pulled out a machine gun and did a mag dump. I think we changed their minds about what a Fudd looked like.
