I have a favor to ask, can someone provide me with the grip widths for a P229 \ M11A1 versus a P220? Pic comparison would be great. For some reason I could never seem to shoot the 228/229/M11A1 accurately. However, I picked up a P220 and NICE!!!!! It just feels so much better in my hand and manages the recoil better than my Colt Commander. So I'm guessing that the thickness of the grip on the 229 models must be thicker which is throwing me off.

The P229 frame is wider to accomodate the double stack magazine. The P220 is single stack.

My phone won't post pictures, sorry. The 220 is slimmer than a 229 or M11.I have a 220 & an M11 with Hogue finger-groove rubber grips and a 229 with Hogue G10 grips. The G10's are a little thinner than the rubber grips, but the 220 is still slimmer.

I was thinking about this as I really don't notice too much difference in actual use. According to the sig specs they say both are 1.5" in width. fwiw “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

do sig specs say the GRIPS are both 1.5" wide? Or that total pistol width is 1.5"? --------------------------- My hovercraft is full of eels.

The numbers on paper almost never translates well in practice, when it comes to grips. Grip width is only one variable. One look and you can see that the P220 grip has a different contour/geometry than the P229 grip. What works well for one person might not do the same for the next. Q

Even with the same style of Hogue G-10’s on both, the P220 was thinner than my P-229’s. It was even more noticeable with the factory grips on both. I shot the P-220 great, could never shoot the P-229’s very well. Yeah, some grip dimensions work better for some people. ______________________________________________ Carthago delenda est

Interesting. Thanks guys That is what I thought but I never had both at the same time. So far I really like the 220. As much as I liked the look and concept of the others I just didn’t shoot them well. This 220 is a keeper though.

Part of the grip width of Classic line SIGs usually includes the decocker swell on the left side. Without that, the width of the P220 at the center of the grip with traditional, non-E2 grip plates, is ~1.27 inch; the same dimension of the P229 is also ~1.27". The circumference of the two is about the same as well. Neither dimension, however, tells the entire story. The shape of the grips also affect how they feel in the hand. ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. I concur with the grip dimensions sigfreund mentioned. My slim P220 grips only cut grip width down to 1.23", close as I can measure. Still not much different than the standard P229. NRA Life

I'm with Sigfreund on this one. I've got both a 220 and a 229. I found that With factory grips the 229 felt better. I put a pair of thin grips on the 220 and then a pair of Hogue G10s on the 220. With the Hogue grips the 220 feels great.

I acquired my First Sig(P220) about ten years ago, and I had been looking for a P228 and a few years back settled on an M11-A1 and while it is a nice pistol, I sold it after I acquired a P225-A1, due primarily because of the grip width and accuracy. The 225 for me is a perfect fit, and way more accurate. The single stack seems to fit my hand perfectly. I would revisit a P228 if one came available(hoping Q adopts me), however a Stainless P225 would be my dream pistol

I agree the 225 feels great in my hand as well. I just wish it had more capacity. A 225 with 12 rounds would be great. The grip difference between the M11A1 and 225 is significant enough to make a difference with my small hands. Thanks for the pic JDG

Well, the mag will stick way out, and that just defeats the purpose of that compact carry gun. Q

Hm. So my hands have been lying to my brain. It's such a sad day when even one's hands can't be trusted... Maybe it's an implied psych job because they're "double stack" in mag width, but I've long had the in-hand impression that my P229s and P226s carried a bit more girth than my P220s when comparing them with comparable grips attached. Actual empirical data says otherwise, so it seems, but that's how the guns have been interpreted and felt for ages by me and my apparently lying hands. EDIT: actually my brain hasn't been lied to. Today I showed a P220 Legion to a customer, subsequently remembered this thread and once we were done with the P220 I proceeded to pick up the P229 Legion that was right next to it in case. At least with those Legion G10/Micarta/whatever grips, comparing the two side-by-side the P229's grip girth over the bulk of its body is obviously fatter, probably close to 20% thinker than the .45AUTO Legion. This message has been edited.
