Not technically a Colt but it is one of the USFA guns manufactured in the old Colt plant under the blue dome and then completely built by Doug Turnbull. This is Doug Turnbull Cowboy Classic #243DT with factory fitted 1 piece Walnut grips.

You know as blasphemous as this is, I’ve never really liked Colts. I mean I love the SAA but I am an American male and I feel like that is genetically encoded at some level but vast number of Colt revolvers past say the 20’s-30’s just have never done it for me.

That isn’t to say those aren’t some very nice revolvers ya got there it’s just to say I am apparently broken.

I always preferred S&Ws to Colts with the exception of the Python which I lusted after for so long. I sold off a large portion of my S&W revolvers over the last 10 years as they weren’t being shot. I’ve also added a few Rugers and Kimber revolvers to the mix. The Kimber K6S machining is every bit on par with the machine work put out by Ed Brown. I will probably pick up one of the new Colt Anacondas if I stumble into to one at the right price.

Well I like both brands about equally. My favorite revolver overall is the Python. I've owned several but only own this one now, which I have posted before. 1963 snubbie. This was the first year the snub Python was offered and it is lettered as late 1963.

The old Dick Special

Only own one Colt revolver, a Trooper Mk.III. It was a Christmas gift from a friend/previous employer.
I missed another one that came into the shop pre- Covid, business was slow except for ammo sales (he dealt mainly in military and older firearms) and we weren’t able to get much inventory from the bigger suppliers I was more concerned with the shop making money than my adding to my pile.

So,post-Covid this Mk.III came in I asked if it was going on the floor and he said that he was going to put it in his collection, he was a big Colt guy. So for about the following year we would joke back and forth about that nasty old Colt with no box or papers.

Fast forward to December 2021, his health while previously bad had progressively gotten worse. Middle of December his S-I-L and grandson came up to the shop and drive him home, he got really bad that day. Before we closed up there were several customers in that afternoon he said to me “Get that trooper out of the safe and bring a 4473 and the state forms.” I assumed that he was selling it, I asked him “Who’s it for?”

He said “You.” Well I protested,,told him I can’t accept that. Well, not the thing for me to have said, boy did he get pissed at me! His S-I-L and grandson took me aside and said over my protests “He wants you to have it. He’s in his right mind, he told me when I first got here he planned on giving it to you on Christmas Eve but you know as well as I he’s not doing well. Take it and enjoy it.”

He wanted to make 85, at that point just under a month away.He did and exceeded that by a bit over a month.

Whenever I take it out I think of him. R.I.P Walt.

When I hear “Colt revolver loveL I always think of this old Detective Special,a co-worker sold it to me when he was hard up for cash. Was his dads in Puerto Rico, just a tore up nickel finish .38 he used for protection running the family shop.



I think I gave him like $200. It was a very smooth shooting .38, just kind of looked like hell.

He got back to me after he left the company, got lucky I guess, cause it was just before I bailed, don’t know if he would have found me otherwise… I loved the gun, but not gonna keep a family piece out of the family, so I sold it back for what I paid.

Still looking for another one and the same finish challenged condition, they make a great pocket carry!

I have had at least one single action army for about the last 30 years, my favorite colt model
I haven’t cared much for the DA’s - I did have an officers model match 38&22 for quite a while, but in bullseye competition they are shot SA anyway ( the 38 was actually SA only)
In my younger days everyone seems to think the python was the ultimate wheel gun. I sold a bunch of stuff to buy one, and it wasn’t in my collection long. I simply prefer the S&W
