I've been unable to find a RZ for sale anywhere. I found one retailer who said they would be "released on December 28th," so maybe they know what they are talking about. Or not.

I think the same retailer said the RD size would be 3 and 8 MOA, while every place else says 3 and 6 MOA.

Regardless, for an old guy with pretty weak eyes, I would think the 6 MOA (8 if it shows up) would be better for self defense than the smaller 3.

Am I right or ...?

It depends on your eyes to some extent, acquiring the larger dot will be easier, however if you have astigmatism it may be blurry, ie shoot for the center of the dots.

Mine with larger MOA appear like the sun, dot in the center with blurry red areas around it the 3 MOA has less of this effect.

It doesn't make a huge difference in my experience. But after many thousands of rounds using an RMR (choice of 3.25 and 6.5 moa) I prefer the smaller dot overall.

Straightshooter:
The larger red dot is best for self defense shooting. You acquire it faster. Actually, its'not bigger, just brighter so appears larger.
For close range shooting __ and pistols are
close range shooters. They are fine until you
can get to your rifle.
A lot of guys talk about hitting their target at fifty yards. Can you imagine the penetration at that distance?
I suspect Shield is making the Zero sights. The Shield is my favorite.

I have a fleet of RMR 06, the dot size really depends on the brightness level. Don't believe me, try one out yourself.

What are you talking about? Dot size is an actual physical attribute of the sight. Dot brightness is something you can adjust.
In my experience a larger dot in the range we are talking about is not faster. But that's just me and several tens of thousands of rounds of experimentation between an RMR06 and RMR07. comparing a 7moa dot to 1 moa dot it might be true, I don't know I've not tried that. YMMV.

My experience with cheap sights is the dimmer you can go and still see it the more accurate....
