Hello all I have a p226 purchased new in 1987 in NJ. The pistol came with 2 - 8 round magazines. If I purchase a new 10 round mag from Sig, will that fit my pistol. And has anyone actually done this with my same/equivalent year of manufacture. Thank you in advance for your response. D

Are you sure you don’t have a P220 or P225? The P226 was originally introduced with 15 round magazines and had 10 round mags for states where those were banned. I don’t believe they ever had an 8 round mag for the P226. The P220 which is usually seen in .45 did have a 9mm variant that had 8 rounders the .45 has had 7,8 and an 10 rounder available. and the P225 came with 8 rounders. "Guns are tools. Being a California resident, my 9mm SIG P226 X5 came with 10-round mags. They work in ordinary 9mm SIG P226 pistols too. A window that opened briefly allowed me to legally purchase (and use) high capacity mags. Serious about crackers

Ohh and no disrespect meant by asking if you were sure of what pistol you had, it’s just that the question you were asking wasn’t making sense to me and I am just asking for clarification. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

Definitely a 226 9mm. And after rechecking my owners manual the mag capacity is 10 rounds. The spring is very tight so I always thought it maxed at 8. Thank you for your reply. D

Then yeah any P226 10 rounder will fit. Load it to 10 and keep it that way for a bit and it will loosen up and be much easier to load. "Guns are tools. The only weapon ever created was man."

Buy that Classic SIG in All Stainless, No rail wear will be painless. |
Don't buy your 10 round P226 magazines from SIG, the Mec-Gar brand magazines are better quality, more reliable, and less expensive. I can't recall having a malfunction with a Mec-Gar 226 magazine. From SIG, they are $49.99 so buy from Greg Cote LLC instead. Yeh, tell me about it. For the non-free states, manufacturers have to make tolerances extremely tight so there's absolutely no chance of inserting more than 10 rds. The tightness should loosen up a bit with frequent use.

. Mr DAJ, welcome to SigForum.... To answer your question, ~ yes, currently manufactured 9mm P226 10 round magazines will fit your P226 purchased new in 1987 in NJ. Extra stuff that you may already know or discovered since your original post... Greg Cotellc is a Member here and a great source for P226 magazines and add-ons: www.GregCotellc.com/cart/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&search_in_description=1&keyword=p226 If this is a "new to you" P226 first sold to someone else in 1987, maybe it's time for new springs for the magazines and internally? Wolf Springs is a good source: www.GunSprings.com/SIG-SAUER%20(SIGARMS)/P226/cID1/mID4/dID254 All of the P226 magazines I own have witness holes with a number stamped next to the hole which approximates how many rounds remain in the magazine. If your magazines have these, how many holes are on the magazines and what are the corresponding numbers? All of my OEM 10-round magazines only have 2 witness holes with the number 5 or 10 stamped next to the hole. I purchased my 9mm P226 in 1987 and have original Sig and other manufacture's magazines that hold 15-round, 20-round, or 10-rounds. I have never seen or heard of an 8 round OEM P226 magazine for 9mm. I saw you already confirmed you don't have a P220 because one of my thoughts is if this is a "new to you" purchase, did the seller give you the wrong magazines? Ask me how I know a seller might have provided the wrong magazine when selling a pistol? lol Another possibility, when CA and NJ laws required max of 10 round magazines, several shops were converting 15 round magazines into 10-round magazines. Some of these conversions are horrible and accept less than 10-rounds. This is why I am curious how many holes your magazines actually have. You may have a 15-round OEM magazine that was converted to 10-round but actually only accepts 8 rounds. .

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Sig magazines often made by Mec-Gar? I've never had a problem with a Sig 'factory' magazine... but I have to admit I'm not one of these folks that runs thousands of rounds at a time... best I've ever done is around 650-700 over 4 days and with no malfunctions from the Sig mags. . Hi Blume9mm... All of my P226 magazines were received with the pistol new from Sig or they are by Mec-Gar made in Italy. I don't believe I have magazines from any other manufacture but some are unmarked. For my Hi-Standard Model B .22cal pistol made in 1933, I bought magazines from Triple K ~ which is a company local to me in San Diego. Those magazines had all kinds of issues related to the feed lips, but I don't know anyone else making new magazines for a 90-year-old pistol. .

If you don't already have one, an Uplula magazine loader should help with getting those last two rounds in.

I have only heard good things about the Men-gar magazines.... but I also hear that a lot of 'factory' magazines come from them... "look for made in Italy" on them... both Sig as well as other manufacturers. Now with that said, at least with my Ruger pistols I quite trying off brand magazines years ago....especially ones that did not even have the makers name on them.... if a magazine doesn't have a manufacturers name on it that tells me a lot about it's quality. Thanks for the link. Interarms TX is one of the companies under the corporation that owns Hi-Standard. In 2014, I bought two Model B Magazines from them at the same time I sent them my Model B for all the springs to be replaced and any worn-out parts to be replaced. Their website shows each Model B magazine selling for $75 I just checked my invoice, I paid $9 each 9 years ago. .

Being a California resident, my 9mm SIG P226 X5 came with two SIG SAUER brand 10-round mags. It was damned hard to get the tenth round into one of them, even using my UpLULA. Leaving that mag fully loaded for an extended period didn’t help a bit. As I noted above, I now have full capacity MEC-GAR mags that are much easier to load to full capacity.
