Does anyone know when Sig stopped putting the W German P220's in the cardboard box with the foam insert? I just bought one from 1993 but not sure if there are any after that or not. Also, when did Sig start issuing the 8 round stainless mags as opposed to the 7 rounders? Thank you in advance

Not sure, my 1995 (KF) came in the grey plastic box with foam, with a cardboard outer box and 2 x 7rd German made dovetail mags.

The transition from the Gray Cardboard Box to the Gray Case occurred during 1994 w/ the 'KE' W.German P220's. Not 100% sure re: the exact timing of the transition to 8 round Stainless Mags but I believe it occurred around the same time SIG transitioned to the Stainless Slide. That said, 'hjs157' is the definitive source for all things P220....He should be along shortly to confirm with absolute certainty! ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! My KF (1995) date coded P220 came in the same grey plastic box and two 7 round dove-tailed mags the same as RHINOWSO described his.

I'd agree that that '94-'95 must have been a transition period. I have no doubt, that like other firearm manufacturers, SIG doesn't throw perfectly good stuff away during transitions. Features, parts, packaging, etc. continued to be used until depleted. For instance, both my KE/'94 and KF/'95 dated P220s came in the gray cardboard box. NRA Life

The German mags were still supplied with the P220 as of 1998, on the ones that I had. The stainless mags, made by Mec-Gar, likely didn't start until 2000 and beyond. Q

I have a 1996 US assembled P220. No date code and the ‘W’ is peened over with the triskelion symbol. I want to say, from reading here, Sig was using up the last of the West German made parts after the reunification of the country.

Correct ^. Sig stopped using the grey cardboard boxes sometime in 1994. I've seen 1994 Sigs in both grey cardboard boxes and the newer grey plastic cases. They also transitioned from the grooved P226 triggers to smooth triggers around the same time. 1994 was a great time for Sig, when they were actually trying to improve their pistols (and boxes), rather than just making them cheaper...not that smooth triggers are necessarily better than grooved ones...just saying. I'm not so certain about the transition from 7-round to 8-round P220 mags. I know they went from the original blued metal follower 7-rounders to 7-round stainless mags with the plastic followers in the very late 90s....definitely no later than 2000. From there, they went from stainless 7-rounders to 8-rounders in the mid-2000s.

No, it’s blued/black; G261xxx serial. It came with Houge rubber grips that I believe are original to the pistol. I have since changed the grips to wood. I’d like to find a set of the early checkered plastic grips that don’t have any logo. This message has been edited. Last edited by: smokycity,

Wow, here I was thinking they reserved all those peened-over 1996 slides for nickel finishes. Can you post a pic? I think that would probably be the first blued one I've seen. The two-toned ones were all the rage that year. I remember a wealthy high school friend got one for graduation....I was green with envy.

Serial number thread lists a few non-Ni P220s from 1996 with the peened-over "W".
