Going to be doing some dog training soon … want to use some gentle .22 acorn blanks to start with and was wondering if anyone has tried such blanks in a ruger single action revolver before and if there were any issues either with the blank or the revolver?

Would likely use one of our ruger wranglers and leave the single six’s out of it.

They should be fine, test a few.

Some blanks can be a little dirty.

It’s been several years since I acquired .22 rimfire blanks, but as I recall at least one brand used black powder. That could cause corrosion problems if the residue wasn’t removed properly. After noticing that I read the labels carefully.

I loaned my single six to a buddy for this purpose and he said it worked fine FWIW.

Thanks guys. And good point about black powder. The two brands I found at my supplier are specifically marked as using smokeless.

just stay away black powder and you should be fine... if you use black powder you don't just need to do a standard cleaning of the barrel and cylinder but really would need to disassemble the entire pistol and clean everything with warm soapy water and then dry and oil.

Regarding dog training what my brother did was take the dog to our gun club on trap night. Start in the parking lot a good distance away from firing line, after a shot and steady a “good dog” and a small treat. Slowly over several weeks advance closer to the firing line with the same program until just behind the line.

My two labs could tell the difference between a rifle and shotgun. Go to the safe and pull out a rifle, they glance over from wherever they were lounging and say whatever. Pull out a shotgun they jumped up wagged and got excited right away. Unfortunately both are gone now and I have been dogless for a few years.

blank guns are not that expensive, why not just buy one?

1) I already have 4 Ruger single action .22’s with holsters that, by present accounts, will work just fine.

2) I’d rather spend the $300.00 for other dog training gear that I do need but don’t already have.

3) I’m more judicious spending money than you are.
