So I’ve joined the Mauser M2 Club. Found this one at a local gun store; the price was right - under $400 for the gun, three magazines, and a leather holster and mag pouch.

My gun is marked Made in Germany; one gun, posted here in 2014 says Frame made in Germany. My gun also has “Friends of the NRA” embossed on the top right slide just after the ejection port.

I have one in .40 and a bunch of mags. Also have a new barrel.
Maybe some day I’ll get around to having the barrel reamed to 10mm and enjoy a little more umpfff.

These NRA ones came in a very fancy presentation box. I think I still have mine somewhere.

I always thought the M2 was a neat little pistol.

Where's the guy that always posts pics of the M2 in 10mm that he had converted? I don't even like 10mm but I covet that every time.

I've never seen one of these in the US. I saw German customs cops carrying them in airports for a few years, but that was a while ago. Are these worth checking out?

They are more of a curiosity than anything else. By no means a bad gun, but there's nothing particularly stand out about it beyond it being uncommon

If you like technically different stuff, it is different than the normal browning action.

Likely referring to colt_saa.
His posts lead me to picking one up in .40 when I came across one, grabbed a bunch of NOS mags, and an extra NOS barrel with the plans on doing the conversion.
Just have not gotten around to it and have lost a bit of interest as I rarely get to shoot anymore.

Neat little pistol. Doing a 10mm conversion is supposed to be the way to go for the .40s the roller action is supposed to keep it very soft shooting.

If I recall correctly, the .40S&W magazine is the same as the .45 except they inserted a piece of metal the length of the magazine to insure the shorter .40 round feeds better.

If you are using .40 magazines for your 10mm conversion, you'll have to remove this insert. I don't remember if they just pulled out of the bottom when you take the magazine apart or if some dremmel work was required.

I do remember the .40S&W functions without the insert.

10mm gets a big fireball with the short barrel.

The Friends of the NRA M2s were all 45 ACP as far as I can recall

Time to generate some more of that interest

Actually it is a rotating barrel action, not a delayed roller locked action. They are different in quite a few ways one of which greatly benefits the conversion

With the rotating barrel the harder the cartridge recoils the more it delays the action from opening. Due to this idiosyncrasy of the design a spring change is not required when going from 40S&W to the 10MM Auto cartridge.

The additional advantage of the rotating barrel action is that recoil energy that would normally be translated to the shooters hand is transposed into the energy that rotates the barrel. The end result is that a 10MM Auto cartridge fired in the M2-10 feels softer than most 40S&W cartridges fired in traditional Browning tilting breach action firearms

While the magazine bodies may be of the same length, the feedlip geometry is different.

Yes the inserts must be removed from the 40S&W magazines also, since these are spot welded, I drill out where the spot welds were to make sure that there are no sharp edges remaining that the follower could catch on

As you mentioned the insert is not required for the magazine to function correctly with the 40S&W cartridge

This is not quite correct. Since most all premium defense ammunitions are loaded with flash suppressant powder these days there is zero difference in muzzle flash depending on barrel length.

Since those of us that like to handload are doing so to save money the powders that are made available to the handloading community do not have flash suppressant in them and therefore have a different both visual and audio signature when fired through various barrel lengths.

On a 1-10 scale, where would you rate the trigger as regards pull, smoothness, stacking, etc.?

7-ish

I would call it almost two stage. The first stage is very smooth, but then there is a smooth-but-heavy second stage of 6-7 pounds.

I think the thickness of the grip makes it feel worse than it is.
